CHEATHAM GETS BY WALKER, LATE IN FASTRAK LATEMODEL SHOW;
AGEE WINS RACE BUT FALLS JUST SHORT OF KROG 'S POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP RUN FOR
SPORTSMAN CLASS
MOBERLY, MO. (Aug 27) - Point Championships were wrapped up on a beautiful
Saturday night August 25, 2007 at Moberly's 24 Raceway. Drivers from Hallsville,
Kirksville, Madison, and 2 from Clarence were proud of their accomplishment to
become 2007 Champions for their respective class. All other racers in the top 10
of their respective class deservedly earned recognition as well for their hard
work by challenging and pursuing that top award. Throughout the year, 241 race
cars earned points and 24 Raceway sincerely appreciates their participation and
commitment to the sport of auto racing. Although points have been determined,
competitive dirt track racing continues each week until October 6 (excluding
Sept. 29 which will be the Busch Grand National race at Kansas Speedway,
followed by the CUP race on Sunday the 30th). See notice of upcoming events at
the end of this report.
RACE RESULTS:
HOBBY STOCKS:
Kevin Renzelmann (#41 Huntsville), the Heat 2 winner, pulled ahead off turn 2 on
the first lap and opened up a lead to distance himself from the field. He went
on to capture the checkered flag and earned 3rd place in the Points. Clayton
Crump (#3C Centralia) had a good run for the evening after winning the first
heat and then finished 2nd in the feature. Remaining glued to the 3rd position
was Mark Forrester (#10 Columbia - 4th in Points) followed by the Point Champion
Alan Hultz (#51 Madison). There was close action between the 2nd-5th cars with
Darrell Nickerson (#32 Moberly - 6th in Points) rounding out the top 5. Super
job! Renzelmann had a 'lot of fun' and thought it was a 'good tacky track'. He
had a 'little bad luck at the beginning of the season', but did a good job
moving up in points.
HORNETS:
Heat 2 winner Brooke Hassler (#21 Columbia - 2006 Point Champ and 2007 2nd place
in Points) was impressively hooked up to maintain a big lead into victory lane
for the 2nd week in a row. He led a 3-car group that kept their positions
throughout the feature. Scoring the 2nd place was Chad Hickam (#9H Hallsville -
2007 Points Champion). Claiming the 3rd spot was Rob Chase (#3 Clark - 4th in
Points) who was driving a new car after crashing the old one a couple weeks ago.
Rookie Galen Hassler (#25 Hallsville - 3rd in Points) racked up a 4th place
behind Chase and was followed in 5th was Vince Jasper (#K-2 Clarence & in top 10
of Points). The Hassler brothers celebrated on the front stretch for the photo.
B. Hassler said the 'track's awesome' and that his 'car has started running
really well lately'. Then he congratulated Chad (Hickam) on his Season Point
victory. When asked about his brother finishing 3rd in points, he said he was
glad for him but would have "been upset if he'd finished ahead of me".
A-MODS:
After a red flag for a big jumble of cars off turn 2, some tremendous
competition ensued between eventual winner Mark Burgtorf (#69 Quincy, IL) and
Mark VanWinkle (#24V Hannibal) who powered into 2nd place. Two other close
competitors battling for 3rd and 4th respectively were Brandon Lennox (#22C New
London - 2nd in Points) and Scotty Roberts (#25 Columbia - 8th in Points).
Sweeping the 5th spot was Mark Dotson (#85D Cameron). It was an unfortunate
night for Vance Wilson (#66 Frankford - 3rd in Points) as he had car problems
all evening (an almost full moon to blame???). Burgtorf said it 'was a good
race' and although lapped cars held both him & the 24V car back, it actually
helped him get the lead.
MFA OIL/BREAKTIME SPORTSMAN:
Pete Agee (#14 Huntsville - 2nd in Points) gave an awesome performance of
passing every car after starting in the rear due to a flat tire on the first
lap. Agee picked up this victory after also winning his heat race. Clinton
"Pinkie" Dale (#7X Moberly) captured the 2nd place. In 3rd was Kyle Chinn (#81
Clarence) but was later disqualified which allowed Larry Krog (#6K / 01K
Clarence) to accept 3rd and the 2007 Points Championship. Because Krog had a
tangle and an easy roll-over damaging his 6K car, Jeff Creed (#01 Cairo - 3rd in
Points) gave up his ride so that Krog could earn the points needed to clinch the
Championship. Points go to the driver, not the car. Joining the top 5 was Chad
Walter (#23 Clarence - 4th in Points) in 4th and Rick Girard (#00 Columbia) in
5th.
MOBERLY MOTORS B-MODS:
Heat 2 winner Bob Woodrow (#3 Hannibal - 4th in Points) once again joined
victory lane and for awhile was followed by close competitor Jim Gillenwater
(#10X Keokuk, IA) until he spun out on the back stretch. So, Dustin Boling (#36
Lentner) charged into the 2nd position followed by the 2007 B-Mod Points
Champion Kelly Smith (#82 Kirksville) in 3rd. Gary Wilson (#11 Holliday - 2nd in
Points) battled hard for the 4th spot with Craig Spegal (#7S New London)
following in 5th. Woodrow said the 'track was different - but awesome". He
enjoyed it! When asked how he was doing at other tracks, he replied that he
"hadn't been racing anywhere but has been working on his house".
FASTRAK LATE MODELS:
What a super competition developed between the top leaders of this 30-lap,
$1000-prize race between the visiting Fastrak Late Model drivers. It looked as
though Darin Walker (#24 Bowling Green) had the race wrapped up but with a
couple laps to go Bert Cheatham (#75 St. Clair) took advantage of the high side
and passed Walker on the restart to pocket the big bucks. Grabbing the 3rd place
was Darrel Moser, Jr. (#22 New Haven) who also took advantage of the restart by
passing Tracey Cotrell (#18X Russellville). Cotrell had to settle for 4th and
was followed in 5th by Dallas Bennett (#28 New Haven). Cheatham (Heat 2 winner)
said it was a 'Godsend' - 'that his only chance was on the high side and luckily
they (Walker and Moser, Jr.) went low and I got around'. He said it was a 'good
night' and said thanks to his 'Mate, up there from Australia' for coming. Kenny
Edwards (Carl's little brother) finished in a good 7th place.
THANKS:

food from the concession stands!

Fan Club and the Adult prizes.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
This week, 24 Raceway has the annual two-day SPEEDBOWL event planned for
Saturday, September 1 AND Sunday September 2, brought to you by Aaron's Sales &
Lease Ownership of Moberly. A $2007 prize awaits the A-Modified winner in this
2-day event. Saturday will be the qualifying for the starting row and the
following 7 rows on the grid for each class. Each class will see 16 cars qualify
for their guaranteed start in the field. A six car / six lap dash on Saturday
will be used to determine the front six starting positions. Sunday will see a
"last-chance" qualifying effort by those not making the field on Saturday thru
the finish in the consy races for each of the five classes. Only the top 8 from
those consy races will transfer. And those cars will line up in rows 9 thru 12
for their respective features, following the previously established 8 rows from
the night before.
And on Sunday the 25th, it's "Dirt Tract Racing at Its Best" with all five of
the regular classes running in extended lap races for big payouts! The
A-Modifieds will be the big one with 40 laps to get to the $2007 first place
prize, while the Moberly Motors B-Modifieds will have a guarenteed 30 laps for a
$500 win. The MFA Oil / Breaktime Sportsman class will race 25 laps, and both
the Hobby Stocks and 4 cly. Hornets get 20 laps for each class.
Admission for this big show is $10 for adults to Saturday night's great
qualifying races and six lap dashes, while $15 on Sunday will get adults into
the grandstand for the big show, with kids, ages 6 to 12, still at $5 each night
to see these five exciting stock car classes! Camping for self-contained units,
along with primitive camping will be available on the racetrack grounds, free of
charge (sounds like a post-race party would be on the agenda, here). A printable
flyer is available on the Heartland Motorsports website, as well as on that of
Quad States Dirt Racing and on our own site of
www.24racewayinmoberly.com
under the forum section. Look for the flyer for the Sept 8th B-Mod Shootout
while you're there, sponsored by MHC Kenworth. Rates for that affordable Family
Pass are $25 for Saturday night and $35 for Sunday, and that includes admission
to the grandstands for 2 adults and 3 children, ages 6 to 12. The grandstands
will open at 4 p.m. both days Pit Passes will cost you $25 apiece each night.
Hot laps start at 6:15 following a short drivers' meeting. "Dirt Track Racing at
its Best" will take place again starting at 7pm at 24 Raceway, east of Moberly,
Missouri on U.S. Highway 24. Action photos from 24 Raceway can be seen at
www.24racewayinmoberly.com
, if you simply click on the forum and chose the heading. Plenty of door prizes
are given away to both adults and kids alike in the grandstands each and every
Saturday night. In the Jr. Race Fan Club, a lucky little one gets to take home a
shiney new bicycle from different generous sponsors each week and have their
name mentioned in the following week's race report. But you do have to be at 24
Raceway to sign up in order to claim the prize!
