QUINCY'S WATERMAN DRAWS FRONT ROW START FOR FINAL TEN LAPS IN
SHOOTOUT AND GOES ON TO WIN A COOL GRAND IN B-MODIFIED CHAMPIONSHIP!
Ron Lueck - Track Spokesman 24 Raceway
MOBERLY, IL (Sept. 9) - The B-modified Championship Shootout brought in 20
B-Modified raceteams into Moberly this last weekend from the three-state area of
Iowa and Illinois, along with Missouri, to try their luck at the 2007 Shootout.
All of these B-mods all came in the hope of a shot at winning that first place
prize of $1000. And 48 other raceteams from the A-mods, Sportsman, Hobby Stock
and Hornet classes all came to run on the well-groomed and high-banked track for
this middle event of five specials in a row, as the 2007 season winds down. And
for the fifth consecutive year, MHC Kenworth of Columbia sponsored this
B-modified race and brought a brand new, shiney red and fully-loaded 2008 KW
T-660 truck tractor to the racetrack for display purposes to show off some of
their new merchandise.
Two heats were used for getting the starting lineups for the B-mod's main
feature. Individual heat winners were Hannibal's Bob Woodrow in the #3 pea green
machine, and the yellow #10X of Jim Gillenwater from Keokuk, Iowa. These two
started on the front row for this field of 20 cars for the big race of the
night, attended by a great group from MHC Kenworth. The first segment ran to lap
20, with the top ten moving on for the final ten lap Shootout.
From the previous racing, the track surface was smooth and dark with three
obvious lane choices: low, middle & high. After a less-than-satisfactory start,
Woodrow jumped into the lead on the restart, followed by Gillenwater, and the
Illinois cars of Wyatt Lantz in his # 22 and Tony Dunker in the #4. With only
one lap down, a single car spin on the backstretch and then a four-car fender
bender in turn 4 caused a red flag to the action. Racing resumed after a lengthy
clean-up with Woodrow leading into lap 12, when he entered into the rear of the
pack of slower cars. Gillenwater remained in 2nd with Lantz running in 3rd, and
Duker back a little ways and trading places for 3rd on only one lap (9). Then on
lap 15, Lantz and Gillenwater tangled as Lantz' collected the yellow #10X in
turn 3 for the 2nd caution. After several laps under yellow and a spin by
Gillenwater on an attempted restart, Woodrow once again jumped to a big lead
until a spin by Lantz in turn 2 collected the two cars of Jake Sewell (# F5) and
James Maxey (#92m), causing the 2nd red light of the race. Lap 17 saw the 1-car
of Mendon, Illinois' Joe Hooper tap the rear of Kelly Smith's #82 to pass, but
then fall back into 4th position as Gillenwater spun out for a 2nd time and had
to leave the track. The restart saw the Kirksville Komet, Smith, move into 2nd
over Dunker's #4 and Hooper's #1. Lap 19 saw the caution light once more from a
tangle by cars in lapped traffic, but Sewell's F5-car had enough car left to
continue another lap to the 20 lap mark, with a left rear shock dangling, a
broken frame and a bent left rear wheel. He came across in 11th position and had
to retire to the pits anyway under the Shootout's custom format allowing only
the top ten cars to continue in the final ten lap dash.
With these fastest ten having transferred into the second part of this set-up, a
re-draw for the starting order took place. Race-leader Woodrow got the worst of
the draw when he picked the number 10 starting position and had to fall back ten
whole places. And the Moberly Motors B-Modified racer getting the best that the
luck-of-the-draw could offer was David Munoz from Columbia in his #43M,
finishing the 1st 20 laps at the 10th and final transfer spot. He was last to
pick up a frisbee and with that winning pole position marked on it! Also getting
good picks, Kevin Embree of Paris got to move his #61 car up from 8th to 3rd for
the restart, and the current 5th place car #71 of Jeff Waterman moved to the
outside front row by drawing the #2 starting spot.
And when the racing resumed after this twenty minute pre-determined pit stop and
re-draw, Waterman was the one who was ready for the challenge. This group of B-mods
started out and ran together as a pack in this dash, and it was an impressive
site. On the 21st lap, Smith spun and had to drop to the back of the pack.
Woodrow went into 3rd on the next lap, following Columbia driver Brad Pfeiffer's
green #32, and then one lap later on the 23rd, Woodrow got around the Pfeiffer
and was challenging Waterman for the front position. The last seven laps were
run in that order: Waterman, Woodrow, Pfeiffer with Dunker coming in 4th over
Smith. Congratulations are in order to Jeff Waterman on a job well-done, holding
onto that lead through the last ten laps here at 24 Raceway and collecting the
$1000 prize.
Earlier, the A-modified class had 15 cars of their own to run their 20-lap
feature and saw a front row of David Holder in the 71-car, along with Hannibal's
always tough Mark Van Winkle in the #24v. Van Winkle got out front over Holder
from the git-go and held that lead over the 2007 track champ from Clarence until
they came into the back of the pack on lap 12. On lap 18, the rolling roadblock
of cars trapped Van Winkle just enough to let Holder take the inside lane and go
on to get his 7th victory of the season. Columbia's Danny Crane ran a strong 3rd
for most of the race and finished there over Matt Dotson, Sturgeon, with
Fulton's Kevin Blackburn taking 5th.
Between the modified races, the MFA Oil/Breaktime Sportsman class saw another
strong performance come from the #6 car from Sturgeon, this week being driven
Joni Petersheim, father of last week's SpeedBowl winner, Ryan. The 81-car of
Kyle Chinn led the first lap, but Petersheim took it from there. Jeff Creed, in
the 01-car started from the outside of row 2 and ran neck & neck with Clarence's
Chinn, both giving Petersheim a good challenge. These 3 ran off from the rest
and had their own brand of fun, with the Petersheim car getting into the
winner's circle for 2 weeks in a row, keeping it in the family. When pressed,
Joni smiled and stated his son Ryan, "is not gettin' the car back",,,,,
In the Hobby Stock class, another Clarence resident, Tom Elsen, led the 1st lap.
Last week's SpeedBowl winner, Clayton Crump from Centralia, took over for the
next two until Elsen got it back on lap 4. Elsen went on to take the win, his
1st since taking the bonus $$$ three weeks earlier on Aug. 18 by winning with
those 4 new Hobby Stock tires.
And in the Hornet class, Bobby McCartney returned to the track from Kirksville,
this time in a Hornet instead of a Hobby. McCartney had a strong run to get the
pole, but was the 1st one out - before completing a lap. Huntsville's John Brown
led all laps and crossed the line in front of the #04, driven by Jerry Warren
from Moberly. Brown was later DQ'd for having an illegal engine in the #01C, so
the win went to Warren, his first at the track and showing he could keep up with
Brown.
There were plenty of prize give-aways, coming from #7 Sportsman Driver, Clinton
(Pinky) Dale and car owner, Reamy Racing of Moberly. B-mod owner/driver David
Munoz of Columbia, brought plenty of give-outs (#8 Nascar mini car hood, Dale
Jr. tee-shirts and the #8 Nascar die-cast), all of which were connected to the
B-mod Championship Shootout. The winner of 24 Raceway's Jr. Fan Club bicycle
give-away, couresy of MHC Kenworth, was 6-year-old Joshua Hoover of Mexico and
younger brother to the B-mod #2H driver Dylan. And thanks again for MHC Kenworth
of Columbia for staying on board for the 5th annual B-Modified Championship
Shootout at 24 Raceway.
Coming up next on September 15th, will be the 4th visit this season to 24
Raceway by the W.O.W. 360 cubic inch Sprint cars in a 20-lap feature race. These
guys can reach some of the fastest speeds on the track, having been clocked at
122 mph in years past. The five classes of A- and B-Modifieds (that would be
Moberly Motors B-Modifieds), MFA Oil/Breaktime Sportsman, Hobby Stock and 4
cylinder Hornets will also run their regular race series. Plenty of kids prizes,
including a bicycle, will be given out to those who sign up for the Jr. Race Fan
Club and get there name pulled for the drawing, along with the Adult prizes too.
A car show is scheduled to take place on the racetrack grounds beginning at 8am
Saturday, being sponsored by "Take A Kid Racing". If you have not seen the
orange flyers, information on registration and classes can be obtained from
Brian & Rhonda at 660-651-8881.
"Dirt Track Racing at its Best" begins at 7pm with a driver's meeting, followed
by hot laps, starting at 6pm. Kids ticket prices are $5 for ages 6 to 12, and
adults are $15 for admission the grandstands to enjoy all six of the racing
