QUINCY'S MICHAEL LONG GRABS VICTORY #1 AT 24 RACEWAY AS SEASON
ENDS
by: Report by Pamela Hassler - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO. with repeated promo /
upcoming info by Ron Lueck
MOBERLY, MO (Sept 24) - It's FALL and although in some ways it doesn't seem
possible, 24 Raceway in Moberly concluded the 2007 racing season on Saturday
night Sept. 22. Race cars, many in need of repair and upkeep, will be garaged
through the winter for a well-deserved rest. Drivers, owners, and crews will
relax and get rejuvenated to prepare for the next season which will arrive in no
time. Track owners, officials, and workers will take a huge breather. All will
enjoy a nice break and look forward to the Award's Banquet in mid-January. It
was a tremendous season of action and excitement! The 24 Raceway thanks all the
fans and sponsors for their support and anticipate a great 2008 racing season.
Checkers to everyone involved in this year's racing at the 24 Raceway in Moberly
- a 1/2 mile dirt oval that provides 'Dirt Track Racing at its Best'!
Have a safe and happy holiday season and winter!
THANKS:
To those who supported the track with prize donations throughout the year!
This week - Proctor and Gamble (coffee)
McDonald's of Moberly (ice cream cones)
Funny Pages Cafe (biscuits and gravy)
Billy and Nichole Bentley (#4B)/Judy Jordan - for the use of the late Bob
Hubert's truck as the Pace Truck
CONGRATULATIONS:
to Sean Miller of Moberly who won $131 in the 50/50 Drawing
RACE RESULTS:
HOBBY STOCKS:
Tim Dawson (#28 Callao) had a very successful night at the race track by winning
his Heat, Feature, and the SS Auto Sport All-Star Race. Dawson took the lead
from the start of the feature and never looked back, even though at times he had
a little competition. Tom Creed (#17 Moberly) and Clayton Crump (#3c Centralia)
stayed close to the front battling for the 2nd and 3rd spots. Crump got the best
of Creed at the end to capture 2nd followed by Creed in 3rd. Alan Hultz (#51
Madison) and Jeff Hamlin (#87 Edina) traveled cross the line in 4th and 5th.
Dawson was excited to try to get his car on the internet banner (which he
eventually did earn).
HORNETS:
Robert Winfrey (#37 Moberly) was also successful in winning his Heat, Feature,
and the SS Auto Sport All-Star Race. Rob Chase (#3 Clark) competed diligently
with Winfrey throughout the race but had to settle in the 2nd position. Kristi
Chase (#33 Clark) made some good challenges to work through traffic to capture
the 3rd spot. John Doctorian (#2 Wentzville) drove well near the front to
collect 4th, followed in 5th by Jerry Warren (#04 Moberly). This was Winfrey"s
2nd feature win of the season.
A-MODS:
Several cautions allowed for many competitve restarts with fast machines
charging to the victory lane. David Holder (#71 Clarence) was the leader for
many of the beginning laps but it was not to be his night. His competitor
Michael Long (#18 Quincy, IL) slid underneath to take the lead and stayed the
course until the checkered flag waved for him.. Having a good race, the last one
before complete retirement sets in, was Henry 'Hank' Delonjay (#35 Quincy, IL)
but at the end he had to pull in. This allowed another hot-shoe Mark Dotson
(#85D Cameron) to charge into the 2nd place. The Kirksville 'Komet' Kelly Smith
(#82J) ran well to pick up the 3rd place dollars. Mark Van Winkle (#35V
Hannibal) patiently and successfully raced into the 4th position followed in the
pack by Matt Dotson (#88D Sturgeon). Darryl Turner (#66T Columbia) was also in
the field to finish 6th. Long said that the yellows saved him. He was "lucky his
tires stayed up". "The track got fast in the middle" and he "got hooked up", he
stated.
MFA OIL/BREAK TIME SPORTSMAN:
Derrick Agee (#14Jr. Huntsville - driving dad Pete's #14) had a great night by
winning his Heat and ultimately this Feature. Clinton Dale (#7x Moberly)
maintained a competitve challenge and captured the 2nd place. Jeff Creed (#01
Cairo) had a good run but at the end he and Rick Girard (#0 Columbis - in
Creed's back-up car) connected and both retired to the pits. Running well and
working up from a mid-pack start was Joni Petersheim (#6 Sturgeon) who accepted
the 3rd place. Coming up to finish in 4th was Billy Apel (#4 Renick), followed
by Randy Rindom in the "other" Rindom car (#42x Moberly) to fill the 5th spot.
D. Agee said he had a 'blast' on this fast track which had a little bite in it.
MOBERLY MOTORS B-MODIFIEDS:
Bob Woodrow (#3 Hannibal) was once again the master of the track by accepting
the checkers. Jeff Waterman (#71 Quincy, IL) picked up an impressive 2nd place.
Landing the 3rd spot was Lonnie Wyman, Jr. (#95 Hams Prairie) followed in 4th by
Gary Wilson (#11 Holliday). Competing for the 5th place was Porter Collins (#46
Clarence). Woodrow said he thought he was 'done for' when his tire started to
come apart.
SS AUTOSPORT ALL-STAR RACES:
The respective winners from these 10-lap races for each of the five classes
competing all year at 24 Raceway, each will have their car pictured on the
website banner for the 2008 season. To have been invited to compete in the All
Star race, a driver had to finish in the top 5 in the season points, have won a
feature during 2007 (including the last Sat. night feature winners), or won one
of this last Saturday night heats leading up to the evening's main race.
And the respective WINNERS ARE:
HOBBY STOCK: Tim Dawson #28 Callao
HORNETS: Robert Winfrey #37 Moberly
A-MODS: David Holder #71 Clarence
SPORTSMAN: Rick Girard #0 Columbia
B-MODS: David Kinder #40 Moberly*
*No actual "race" occured in this class. The five qualified drivers agreed to
have car #40 pictured as the 'WINNER" out of respect and honor to car owner /
mechanic Bob Hubert, who passed away a week ago. Kinder stated the Bob "wouldn't
like it' - that 'nothing was given to him' - 'he liked to race', BUT the honor
was accepted and appreciated. The car then took a couple of 'victory' laps for
Mr. Mopar, as the crowd respectfully looked on. And so ends the 2007 season.
Thanks for a great one!
Thank you one and all for another great season at 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO. The
racing this year on the half-mile dirt track was just plain decent from April to
September and offered enjoyment to all who came to view. Thanks to the fans as
well as the dirvers, car owners and pit people who participated. Watch for
information on a fun day / practice, followed by a hog roast & band on October
13, (with the weather's cooperation). The annual banquet and awards dinner
should be on a Saturday night once again in the middle weeks of January, 2008.
Watch for any updates to the rules for A-Modified, MFA Oil / Breaktime
Sportsman, Hobby Stock and Hornet classes in the future on the website of
www.24racewayinmoberly.com under the forum section. Currently, the New
B-Modifieds rules limiting compression ratios to 9:1 and size limits to 360 c.i.
engines (370 for Mopar engines), are posted in a draft form on the forum. Any
comments on those rules will need to be made by September 29, and can be done by
personal contact or post them on the same forum.
