COLUMBIA'S SCOTTY ROBERTS DOMINATES A-MODIFIED MAIN FEATURE AT 24 RACEWAY
by: Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO

MOBERLY, MO (May 31) - The rain stayed away from Mobery for something different on Saturday this week, as the open-wheel A-modifieds saw Scotty Roberts pick up the win in a dominating performance at 24 Raceway. Roberts, in the #25 car from Columbia, started on the outside of row 2 of a restructured line-up after four late scratches, which included pole sitter Mark Dotson of Cameron, but led all the laps for his first win of the 2008 season. He made the move around both the 22c of Brandon Lennox and 26k of Kevin Blackburn on lap 1, led the way into the lapped traffic on the 8th lap and most importantly, at the end of the race. From the start, the battle was close in the fight for 3rd as the strong cars of Blackburn, Matt Dotson, David Holder, Kelly Smith and Vance Wilson put on a good show throughout the race. Roberts established his lead over Lennox after a half dozen laps, but about the only time the field was bunched up was on the two cautions coming on laps 3 and 18 due to slowed cars on the track. A lot of afternoon work went into the track and infield prep for this night after that Friday downpour, as Roberts won on a track that got more smooth during the evening's class racing. Lennox, of New London, held that 2nd spot throughout the 20-lap race, as Blackburn finished in 3rd, followed by Sturgeon's Matt Dotson for 4th. It was good to actually get a 3rd race in after the five rain-outs during the first two months of this 2008 season.

In the Moberly Motors B-modifieds, Holliday's Gary R. Wilson, led the first six laps, but surrendered the lead to Blake David on lap 7. After some initial banging around of the cars in the middle of the pack on the first lap and coming out of turn 2, Wilson recieved plenty of challenge from Fulton's young Mr. David and also from Chad Lebsock of the Hallsville area. Wilson was able to hold off Lebsock to take 2nd in this 15 lap event, with Charlie VanBoening coming in 4th. David's engine blew on the lap after crossing the finish line and stated he "had only 1 lap left" in the #1 car, then thanked his sponsors as he was pushed in, and then out of victory lane.

The MFA / Break Time Sportsman class saw Columbia's Andrew Page get his first-ever front row start, on the outside. But Clarence's Chad Walter took to the lead from the pole and led the first 3 laps. The winner of the Sportsman Special from two weeks back, Rick Girard - also of Columbia, came on to challenge at lap 2 and took over the lead at lap 4. After a couple of cautions, Girard led the way to the line in front of Walter in a green-white-checkers finish. Girard, Walter, and the Randolph County trio of Clinton Dale, Pete Agee and Jeff Creed all provided exciting, close racing as Girard picked up his second win of 2008. The others finished in that order.

In the other racing programs, Kevin Renzelmann started on the pole along side Hannibal's #9C, Steve Carlin, in the Hobby Stock race and ran side by side for the first lap. But Carlin came out in front and led all 12 laps, in spite of a turn 2 wreck that brought out a race-stopping red flag before the first lap got completed. Only 13 of the 17 cars that started at the green could continue, with Centralia neighbors Stewart Burton and Clayton Crump chasing Carlin, until Burton's car handling went away from him on the final lap. Crump finished in the 2nd position as Burton dropped to 4th behind the previous two race week's winner, Tom Creed of Moberly. At the winner's photo shoot, Carlin said "thanks" to his sponsors and especially his "Mom - a lot".

The Hornet class saw previous track champ Brooke Hassler, break to the lead over Wentzville's John Doctorian for the first 7 laps until Doctorian's #2 car lost a rear wheel and caused a lot of havoc with 5 cars all running towards the front. After the red flag in this race, Doctorian couldn't return for the restart, and both Kristi Chase of Clark and Richard Doctorian of Smithville moved up to follow 2nd place runner John Brown. In the end, it was Columbia's Hassler leading all laps in his #21, with Chase coming in 2nd over R. Doctorian for 3rd. In his time on the post-race interview , Hassler stated "this one's for Mom". His mother, Pamela Hassler, report writer for this column for the last couple of years, passed away in mid-April.

Thanks go out to Robbie & Tammy Wailes, the Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Dept., and O'Reilly Auto Parts for furnishing prizes for fan give-aways. Thanks to Rhonda Acton and Tammy Evans for taking on and organizing of the 24 Raceway Jr. Race Fan Club and its associated drawings for kids door prizes.

This following Satuday will be the monthly flea market and swap meet for auto parts to be held on the grounds of 24 Raceway, near the main entrance by the shop building along the north side of U.S. Highway 24. This sale is planned for each 1st Saturday of the month and open at 7am.

Later, it's time for the annual Larry and Delina Prather entourage of their cars recreating the "Dukes of Hazzard" theme. A show-car version of the General Lee will be on hand for photos early in the evening. And between the evening's heat racing and the features, there's likely to be a skit on the track involving some Duke family shenanigans with car chasing by the likes of "Sherriff Rosco P. Coltrane and Boss Hogg", once more. Along with the General Lee, will be Boss Hogg's Cadillac convertible, Rosco's Police Car, Daisy's Jeep and even Uncle Jesse's Pickup. The Prather family & friends in costume, as well as the other cars, will be around the stands later on after the intermission for even more photo opportunities. The kids and grandkids love this, and most of 'em recognize that sound of the General Lee's horn, so be sure to bring the family out for this one.
