QUINCY'S MICHAEL LONG TAKES LAP 2 LEAD AND DOESN'T LOOK BACK IN A-MOD FEATURE AT 24 RACEWAY
by: Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO

MOBERLY, MO (June 7) - Two in a row! Races that is, at 24 Raceway - a first for the 2008 season. And Michael Long traveled from Quincy, Illinois to get this win in the A-modifieds. Long took over from first lap leader, Mark Dotson of Cameron, on lap two after a complete restart due to debris on the track in turn one. Long never looked back, as the 2nd and 3rd positions were being swapped from lap six on, between the Kirksville Comet - Kelly Smith, and David Holder. By lap 14, Smith moved into 2nd and went to end thinking that was his finish, but the tech inspection showed the car was a bit light, most likely resulting from a heat race incident. Smith received his first dq in memory in a feature race. Randy Mauzey brought his car up from a 3rd row start into 4th place by lap 2 and stayed in that position for the rest of the 20 lap race, finishing just behind Clarence's Holder. With Smith's dq, Holder got 2nd and Madison's Mauzey moved up to 3rd. Another Quincy driver, Steven DeLonjay, finished in 4th.

The intermission show for the night, brought on not one, but two 70's theme skits by the Larry and Delina Prather family from Cairo. The first was a chase scene out of Smokie & The Bandit with a semi, a 70's TransAm and a police car that got it's doors blown off, literally, in the chase. Next up, were the characters and cars recreating the "Dukes of Hazzard" theme. There were Duke family shenanigans, "moonshine", hood hook sliding across the General Lee and car chasing by the likes of "Sherriff Rosco P. Coltrane and Boss Hogg" in his white 3-piece suit and matching white Cadillac convertible. Rosco's Police Car, Daisy's Jeep and even Uncle Jesse in his Pickup were in the mix too. Many thanks to the Prather family & friends for bringing out the cars and staying around the grandstands later after the intermission for some photo opportunities. Kids got a kick out of this one. So did the adults.

In the MFA / Break Time Sportsman class, Moberly's Charlie Rindom got his first win as he punched his red #84x into the lead from lap one and stayed there. A strong performance by Tim Eravi in the heats got him a front row start and a solid 2nd place finish over points leader Clinton Dale, both also of Moberly. Dale got 3rd over Huntsville's Derrick Agee.

Brian Robinson got his first ever win in the Moberly Motors B-modifieds, with a heck of a challenge from Holliday's Gary R. Wilson. Wilson, the season points leader, finished ahead of Columbia's Gary Lewis, and then followed by Chad Lebsock of Hallsville. Moberly's Robinson led all laps in this one as the field only tightened up during two caution flags in the 12-lap race.

Tom Creed and Clayton Crump claimed the front row in the Hobby Stock race and ran side by side for the first lap, until Moberly's Creed put his car into the lead from the inside pole. Crump could pull along side Creed on the low side, but couldn't get around him as Creed and Centralia's Crump did some bumping and finished one-two in this good, close 12-lap race.

The Hornet class had the most cheering of the night, on this clear, windy evening. Fans really pulled for a favorite here, as Clark resident Rob Chase broke to the lead over Brooke Hassler on the first lap. A couple laps later, Robert Winfrey passed Hassler and stayed there in second as this was the finish order: Chase, followed by Winfrey of Moberly and then Columbia's Hassler. Kristi Chase ended up with fourth.

Thanks go out to the Mid-Mo Cruisers Car Club, KZZT FM-105 of Moberly, Dea Coffman's pictures and Proctor & Gamble for furnishing prizes for fan give-aways. Thanks to Rhonda Acton and Tammy Evans for taking on and organizing of the 24 Raceway Jr. Race Fan Club and its associated drawings for kids door prizes.
