Quincy's Long Wins at Moberly
By: Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO

MOBERLY, MO (June 28) - Best car count of the season so far, complete with 34 A-modified teams, and the results were one heck of a 20-lap A-modified feature at 24 Raceway. Fans went away expressing "great show" and "good race night" comments after that finale. With four heats to accomodate the 34 teams, only the top four qualifiers of each heat are guarantied a starting position. And since there's a limit of 24 starters on the grid for the feature, that means there's a B-Main to determine the other eight who get into that A-feature race.

After the intermission following the heats for the entire field of 93 cars, the B-main (consy race) was run with their 10-lap race with 16 participants. Donnellson, Iowa's Tony Fraise came from a last row start in this to take the lead at midway, and then on to the finish for an inside 9th row start on the 24-car grid for the A-main. In the four heat races, Vance Wilson and Brandon Lennox got the 1st two qualifying positions on the front row, while the next two were Mark Van Winkle and Michael Long from the Hannibal / Quincy area, winning heats 3 and 4, respectively. Ten race teams did not make the cut.

In the feature, the final race of the evening, Van Winkle came on to lead the 1st five laps and through three cautions. By lap 6, Long was on the move and movin' out until a yellow came out a few laps later. The rest of the race ran caution-free as Long went out ahead of Van Winkle, who was in a race for 2nd with Lennox, Wilson and Dave Holder. By lap the half-way mark, Fraise had moved up to 4th, behind Holder and Wilson. Then it was Long in front, followed by Holder, and both Fraise and Wilson vying for 3rd. At lap 18, Long still had the lead over Holder, and Fraise had moved to 3rd over Van Winkle as Wilson's suspension had a problem in the race. Long went on to the winner's circle, just two weeks after a DQ took away what looked like a 2nd straight win here at 24 Raceway. After resolving those tech issues here and at other area tracks, Long returned to Moberly with his Ford-powered A-Mod and ran it through the tech inspection prior to the racing, just to make sure of it's complience. With the tech inspectors giving the car a 'thumbs up', Quincy's Long went out and once again put on a very impressive performance in his win, now his 2nd at Moberly in the A-mods, out of the 1st seven races and on a 'double points' racing night.

In the B-modified race, Gary R. Wilson from Holliday went to the front from the drop of the green flag, and was out ahead by a quarter lap just four laps later. The battle was for 2nd between Brian Robinson and Blake David, with David getting into 2nd place for good on lap 8. Moberly's Robinson finshed in 3rd, while Tyler Lewis came on to drive Dad, Gary's car and come in at 4th as he got around Mark Forrester, once the leaders entered the lapped traffic. Wilson led all 15 laps in this caution-free race, to get his 3rd victory in a row, his 4th overall against three 2nd place finishes this season.

The MFA / Break Time Sportsman class points leader, Clinton Dale of Moberly, added to his season lead by going up high on the track to lead all 12 laps from the start, getting his 3rd win in a row and 4th of the season. Chad Walter got into the 2nd position from a lap 2 pass over Andrew Page and finished in 2nd for two consecutive weeks. Jeff Creed got around Page and stayed there for the middle part of the race, but Page came back to edge out Creed and secure 3rd. So far, the new racecar driven by Dale is undefeated in both heats and features.

After a false start and thereafter a restart in the Hobby Stock class, Alan Hultz came on to lead the 1st four laps and then get passed on lap 5 by eventual winner Tom Creed from Moberly. Hultz finished in 2nd after Creed came charging up through the pack and picking off Mike Wolfe and Darrell Nickerson along the way. Once their race got going after the restart, these Hobbys ran the 12 laps without any further yellow flags.

Devin Still and Rob Chase each won their 4 cylinder Hornet heat races and raced in a one-two order the entire 12 laps. Still couldn't quite shake off the hard charging by Chase, but held on to win his 1st feature race of the season. On lap 3, Mike Denslow of Huntsville made the best save of a spin by one of these Hornets after getting bumped, then doing a 360, and kept it going forward to finish in 3rd.

Thanks go out to the Mid-Mo Cruisers Car Club for providing of the kid's fan club giveaways. Marci Venneman of Bowling Green won a 50/50 pot of $135 and was very appreciative. The Family Fun Day was very well attended by the young kids. Some 50 kids got face paintings, played games, got food and drink furnished, and even got to drop some of the adults into the dunking booth.

A big fireworks show, sponsored by J&M Displays out of Yarmouth, Iowa is in store for the end of the night. And once more, Moberly's L&J Development is back as the Sponsor of this event. They're located in Moberly on North Avenue, doing residential and commercial building in Moberly and the greater Randolph County area.

Rates for the Family Pass are $40 for this one, which includes admission to the grandstands for 2 adults and 3 children, ages 6 to 12. Kids under 6 are always free. The grandstands will open at 5 p.m. Hot laps will begin at a different time of 6:45 following a short drivers' meeting. "Dirt Track Racing at its Best" will take place also at a special time of 7:30pm at 24 Raceway, east of Moberly, Missouri on U.S. Highway 24.
