HOLDER TAKES ADVANTAGE OF TURNER'S MISFORTUNE TO TAKE
FIRECRACKER 40 WIN AT 24 RACEWAY IN A-MODIFIEDS PART OF THE SUNDAY RACE.
by: Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO
MOBERLY, MO (July 13) - The front runners were dropping off with a variety
of problems in this 40-lap race, with attrition taking its toll. First it
was Scotty Roberts taking the lead for the first 6 laps, then surrendering
to Eric Turner for laps 8 thru 25, until Turner's engine went up in smoke.
Roberts had pitted at midway in the event for handling problems. Others
running near the front and having that misfortune bug bite them, included
Mark Dotson, Curt Rackers and Kelly Smith. The last two had the worst mishap
of the race in turn 4 on lap 24. Rackers, running in 3rd got caught up in an
incident with another car and left Smith with no room on the turn. Their
resulting wreck brought out the 2nd race-stopping red flag of the night.
Both drivers were unhurt.
An earlier red flag was thrown for a re-fueling of the cars at lap 20.
When things got going again, it was Dave Holder and Tony Fraise putting on a
heck of a show for laps 25 through 38, almost always with Holder being able
to come out just ahead of Fraise from the turns and when crossing the line
at the front stretch. Fraise was the stronger one through the curves. Holder
held his own by a safe margin for the final 2 laps and picked up the win
over Fraise, along with the $1000 check in the race sponsored by L&J
Development of Moberly. Michael Long, moved from an initial 4th position to
3rd about midway through the race and held that position to the end, with
Ron Gough coming in at what was thought to be a 4th place. Later in the
following technical inspection of the racecars, both Fraise's and Gough's A-modifieds
did not pass the post-race inspection of the cars, where the published rules
are specific in regards as to no aluminum components in the brake and
suspension areas. This left Long's car to take the 2nd place position and
Scott Drake to move up to 3rd, followed by Brandon Lennox. Although not
pleased, both Fraise and Gough were cordial when protesting the tech team
calls.
