USMTS RACE ENDS WITH TESCH & VANDERBEEK IN DEAD EVEN TIE AT
24 RACEWAY
by: Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO
MOBERLY, MO (August 2) - Race no. 2 of the one-two set up in the 3rd Annual
Iowa-Missouri Border War for the United State Modified Touring Series took
place this last Saturday at 24 Raceway, Moberly. On Friday night, the first
version of this A-modified race saw Kelly Shryock of Feritle, Iowa, win from
the pole as he led all the laps at the Bloomfield, Iowa track. Saturday's
Missouri version of this USMTS show gave the fans something to witness that
just doen't happen very often in this sport - a dead even tie at the line
for the win. Scoring was an even split among those in the track's tower, as
were the fans' reactions about who crossed the finish line first. Ask
different people what they thought they saw, and the answers were split as
even as the scorers.
After an impressive four-wide salute to start the race, with flags in the
racecars on two parade laps and the lyrics of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the
USA" booming from the track's sound system, Jon Tesch of Watertown, SD, took
over the lead on lap 2 from his row 3 inside starting position. By lap 14 of
the 35 lap race, a hint of what was to come saw Tesch cross the line side by
side with Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa. On lap 33, a 4th caution of
the evening's main event came out, setting up a green-white-checkers finish.
But on the restart and while running back a little ways in the pack,
Kirksville's Kelly Smith tagged the wall on the backstretch, got sideways
and flipped over, bringing out the red flag. Smith emerged uninjured after
righting the car and the field was once more sent in motion, tightening up
the positions for the finale. Tesch was still in the front after 33 laps and
racing on the high line, but VanderBeek used the next two laps to plan his
run at the finish by staying low. Tesch continued to hold off VanderBeek
each of the last couple laps at the line. Coming off turn 4 on the final
lap, VanderBeek made his charge for the lead and this is where a
freeze-frame camera at the line sure would have been handy. These two
crossed the finish line simultaniously, with Clarence's David Holder
following close behind at third. It was decided to mix the 1st and 2nd place
prize money and split it evenly between Tesch and VanderBeek for their
efforts, with only four cautions in the 35 laps. Both drivers got credit for
the victory in a crowd-pleasing race and exciting finish.
In the night's other racing, the Moberly Motors B-modifieds had a lap 13
caution flag, and it too, set up a green-white-checkers finish. Blake David
of Fulton led all the laps in this one, but with the field tightened up
towards the end from the only yellow flag of the 15 laps, Holliday's Gary
Wilson gave his best effort for the win. It just didn't happen for Wilson as
David held on and got win #4 for the season and 2nd straight at 24 Raceway.
Wilson still leads in points for 2008 by 116 over David.
The MFA / Break Time Sportsman season points leader, Clinton Dale, finally
got de-throwned from the winner's circle as a first-time winner from
Clarence came through from a row 5 starting position. Chad Walter simply got
his black #23 moving up through the pack, getting into 2nd by lap 3 of this
12-lap race. By lap 5, Walter had taken over the lead and just one lap
later, held a six-car lead over Derrick Agee. By lap 9, Randy Rindom moved
into 2nd and stayed, pushing Agee to 3rd for the finish. Walter, in victory
circle for the first time, thanked his main sponsor, Walter Auto Sales and
Repair among others, and soaked it all in after a very well-run race.
Hobby Stock season points leader, Tom Creed of Moberly, led all 12 laps and
by a wide margin in this race, his first win since June 28th. Clayton Crump
of Centralia came out of a pack of 10 cars vying for 2nd place, and finshed
there ahead of Madison's Chase Breid.
And Hornet points leader Rob Chase from Clark, won the 4 cylinder Hornet
race, after a tough battle with Devin Still of Anabel. Still stayed on
Chase' rear bumper for the final two laps, but couldn't pull off a pass and
had to settle for 2nd, just ahead of the winner from two weeks back, Kristi
Chase.
Thanks go out to Lee's Fried Chicken, Proctor & Gamble, KZZT 105.5 FM and
other sponsors for providing of the kid's fan club giveaways. Thanks again
to Rhonda Acton for organizing of the 24 Raceway Jr. Race Fan Club. Dylan
Adkinsson of Hallsville won the 50/50 pot of $182.
