HOLDER IS SEASON CHAMPION ON DBL. POINTS NIGHT AT 24 RACEWAY
by: Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MOMOBERLY, MO (August 11) - The
A-modified 2008 Champion is David Holder of Clarence! By winning ten of the
13 events that actually got to race this during this weather-hampered
season, the Iceman Holder got his second consecutive A-modified championship
at Moberly's fast half mile, 24 Raceway. Although the season points are
still being accumulated in the other classes, it was decided at the night's
drivers meeting to make this a night of double points towards the season
total, due to the August 30th SpeedBowl event being a non-points special for
the A-mods only. Along the way, Holder garnered a Firecracker Forty win and
placed 3rd in last week's USMTS show for two of this summer's A-modified
special events. Holder, starting on the outside of row 3, threaded the
needle on the first lap past Gary Wilson, Terry Wilson and Mark VanWinkle to
get into 2nd behind Vance Wilson, and then made his move to the lead on lap
2 and never gave it up. Kelly Smith completed the 20-lap race in 2nd with a
good move of his own on the 7th lap to finish there. Brandon Lennox came in
3rd for the night and finished out the season points run as runner-up & 106
points behind Holder.
Fulton's Blake David got his 5th win of the season in the Moberly Motors B-modifieds
by charging into the lead from his front row starting position. David led
all the laps to make it his third win in a row, as the challenge was really
for 2nd place between Tyler Lewis and Gary Wilson. Wilson used the high line
to try and get ahead of the young Lewis, but always was relegated back to
the 3rd spot at the line. Lewis took over 2nd from his pole position start
and kept ahead of Wilson, the current season points leader, all the way to
the finish of this 15-lap race.
The MFA / Break Time Sportsman race had three different lead changes in this
one. Last week's winner, Chad Walter, got the pole start and led the first 3
laps. Then Pete Agee took a turn at the front, until new-comer Shane Weller,
of Agency, Iowa took over for the last seven laps. It was a good selection
of 18 cars that turned out for this race as Weller finished 1st, followed by
Agee, then his son Derrick Agee in 3rd and Walter coming in 4th place.
Tim Dawson of Callao, got his Hobby Stock to the front from an outside start
on row one and led all the laps as both he and Alan Hultz pulled away from
the other 11 cars in this caution free race. It was Dawson getting his win
#2 for the season, then Hultz for 2nd as pole sitter, Stuart Burton, had to
battle the whole 12 laps with Tom Creed to get 3rd.
In the 4 cylinder Hornet class, points leader Rob Chase got to lead only lap
one, as Moberly's Robert Winfrey led the rest of the 11 to claim the win.
Brooke Hassler took over in 2nd and battled Chase for most of the race to
finish there, as Chase had to settle for 3rd.
In the A-Modified mechanic's race following the night's racing program,
Kirksville's Dental Williams beat Kevin Chinn and Steven Hall to the finish
line, even after leaving the mandatory mid-race stop for a tire change in
next-to-last position in the 6-lap race.
Thanks go out to: Burton Racing of Centralia, Lee's Fried Chicken, Proctor &
Gamble, Debbie's Checkered Flag Daycare, Jacksonville's Volunteer Fire Dept.
and Brandon Lennox for providing prizes used in the kid's fan club
giveaways. Thanks again to Tammy Evans and Rhonda Acton for organizing of
the 24 Raceway Jr. Race Fan Club. Candy Bohn of Moberly was the lucky ticket
holder in the 50/50 pot and won a cool $125 for the evening.
PROMO and NOTICE of a PIT STOP for 2 WEEKS:
Last week, we (24 Raceway) have had a re-thinking in our business operation.
The first half of the season is traditionally the better attended events on
the schedule, by both fans as well as with driver/car participation. Our
numbers for 2008 have been lower than recent history on car counts, pit
admissions per car entry, and also on the fan base from the start of this
season, and due to the excessive rain-outs, so has the revenue. We were 0
for April events, and then rained out half of May. The doubling up of
advertising on the specials, canceled due to weather, certainly does cut
into profits. Each of the last few seasons, we averaged 105 car entries for
the five standard classes for the first half of the previous seasons. This
year, our low number on cars has been 69 while the high was the 93 that came
during the build-up to the Firecracker Forty. But the average of the 13
events has been only 80. We've had the same increases in fuel costs and
operating expenses as most businesses, but this last half of July, we've
been struggling with more and higher costs for payment. Expenses far exceed
our income, and the easiest item to cut spending on is advertising. Our
remainder of the 2008 season is currently undergoing an overall
restructuring. Cutting out non-essentials is the first step in our 'survivor
mode' operation and the paper publications are being suspended wholly across
the board, while radio ads are being cut back drastically. Internet info
should remain unaffected. The specials scheduled for Labor Day weekend
August 30 as the SpeedBowl 2008; the Bob Hubert Memorial B-Modified
Championship Shootout set for September 6; and the Fall 360 Classic on
September 20 are still proceeding as scheduled and are not in any jeopardy.
And we're currently working on an event special for September 13.
Although the current economic conditions seem to be in a downturn, we are
not in any economic recession. We do hope this entire situation improves
tremendously by next racing season, as well as the economy on all fronts.
Thank you for your attendance so far during this 2008 season and please look
to attend more racing action at 24 Raceway, resuming with the SpeedBowl 2008
as a one-day event on August 30th. Again, this is a business, and surviving
during these tougher economic conditions is our main goal. As most of you in
a business operation already understand, you cannot continue down the road
of more outgo verses a falling income, without some sort of modification,
and this Pit Stop is just one of those modification periods. More info could
be presented here, but the point is we're simply suspending racing for two
weeks so that we may regroup and continue through the end of the 2008
season. Watch for the promotion of all of these events and come on out to
watch the remaining racing action.
