MOBERLY, MO (April 11) - It was a cold one for Opening Night at 24 Raceway, as nine states were represented by the 102 cars coming in to compete, 39 of which were A-modifieds racing in the first of two U.S. Modified Touring Series shows sheduled for this season. Jon Tesch of Watertown, South Dakota crossed the line in a dead even tie with New Sharon, Iowa's Zack VanderBeek in the USMTS event last August 2. This year, it was Tesch pulling out all the stops to lead the final ten laps over VanderBeek and win the 35 lap feature. Kelly Shryock of Ferile, Iowa dominated the first laps, with Quincy's Michael Long running in and out of the top 3. Then on lap 12, the current points leader in the series, Jason Hughes of Westville, OK, took over the lead for about 14 laps, until a flat tire took its toll on lap 26. That's when Tesch went to the front and never looked back. VanderBeek had a rearview mirror-full of Pea Ridge, Arkansas's Johnny Bone, Jr., but held onto finish in 2nd, two car lengths behind Tesch. That win paid him $2000. Preceeding that big race of the night, the Sportsman class put on a great show of their own with the front-running cars racing in a pack. Derrick Agee, Huntsville, led all of the laps in this one, but Joni Petersheim of Sturgeon put his Chevy right behind Agee's Chevy several times as if they were tied together. Rick Girard of Columbia finished 3rd in a tight race over Moberly's Clinton Dale for this Sportsman feature. Centralia's Clayton Crump also led all the laps in the Hobby Stock race and won over Moberly driver Tom Creed, 2nd, and Iowa's Nathan Wood in their caution-free 12-lap feature. In the B-modifieds, it was Fulton's young Blake David starting off the 2009 season with another signature win from a front row start. He had a comfortable lead in the end over Iowa's Andrew Schroeder, 2nd, and Tyler Groenendyk for 3rd. And the 4 cylinder Hornet class kicked off the night with a great race of their own as Brooke Hassler of Columbia, led the first half of the feature, and Deven Still led the second part in some close racing. But Hassler came on strong, retaking the lead during the white flag while on the backstretch to get the win as Macon's Still blew up while crossing the finish line. Rob Chase and Kristi Chase finished close behind for 3rd and 4th, respectively.
