CLINTON DALE PERSEVERES IN THE 25-LAP SPORTSMAN SPECIAL AT 24
RACEWAY MOBERLY, MO (April 25) - For the first 14 laps of the Sportsman Special, it was a trading of the lead between two Moberly drivers, Tim Eravi running up high on the 24 Raceway track, while Clinton Dale used the lower lanes. After a caution on lap 15, Derrick Agee got his turn at the front for a couple of laps until the next yellow flag came out. On that lap 18 restart, Eravi resumed his role at the front, fending off Joni Petersheim this time until lap 20, when Dale regained the lead for a moment until another spin brought out the caution, this time by Moberly's Randy Rindom. With Rindom stalled in turn 3 and facing the wrong way, Larry Perkins couldn't stop in time and the resulting head-on crash brought out the race-stopping red flag on lap 21, as both drivers and cars were attended to. When racing resumed, Dale jumped back to lead the remining 4 laps with Jeff Creed of Cairo close behind. Chad Walter of Clarence came in 3rd after starting from the pole position, followed by Mike Harward of Floris, IA. Rounding out the top five was Huntsville's Agee, the winner from opening night, two weeks earlier. In the night's earlier racing, 2008 A-modified Champ, David Holder of Clarence, led all 20 laps from the pole and by a comfortable margin. Only a couple of restarts brought the field of cars back together, with Kelly Smith of Kirksville and Hannibal's Mark VanWinkle racing for 2nd. That is until midway in the race, when Smith had to retire to the infield from a brush with the turn 4 wall. Macon's Tony Garner returned to racing in the A-modifieds this night after a year or so away, in Smith's back-up car and came in 3rd, ahead of Craig Spegal and Jacob Grotewiel. Holder showed domination this night in winning by half of a lap on the half-mile track. The B-modifieds used up their allotted time in the shortened 12-lap race, with Chad Lebsock of Hallsville also winning from the pole. Lebsock led all the laps on his way to his first victory at 24 Raceway. In Hobby Stock competition, Kevin Renzelmann led the middle 8 laps, but finished 2nd behind last season's champ, Tom Creed of Moberly. In two restarts towards the end of their 12-lap race, Centralia's Clayton Crump led for a lap and then Creed led for only one lap, but it was the one that counted. And in the Hornet class, Rob Chase of Clark, led all the laps for his first win of the season, while wife Kristi worked her way up to a runner-up finish.
