FOUR OF THE SIX CLASS WINNERS ALSO LEAD ALL THEIR LAPS AT 24 RACEWAY

MOBERLY, MO (May 14) - Last weekend at 24 Raceway in Moberly, Missouri, seventeen drivers challenged the high-banked 4/10-mile track for a $1,000-to-win special double point's-earning event.  Hometown driver Danny Lorton outran two veteran drivers, David Barker and Randy McGraw to bring home the checkers in heat race number one.  Heat race number two saw Kevin Kaiser leading the way with Bryon Allison second and Bob King third.  When the green flag fell on the 20-lap main event, it was Lorton and Kaiser that brought the field to the green flag.  From the onset, Kaiser pulled out to an early race lead with Barker and Allison battling lap-after-lap for second position.  Danny Monroe and Steve Clancy both exited the race early with mechanical issues, which spoiled their race experience.  Kaiser maintained his lead at the halfway point and picked up the bonus money for leading on lap ten as Barker and Allison waged a fierce battle for the runner-up spot.  Meanwhile, Lorton held strong in fourth as Bob Test comfortably ran in third position until he could not avoid a spinning lapped car on lap 13, which ultimately ended his top-five run.  Once the track was clear the field once again set their sights on Kaiser.  Second-place runner Allison tried to make several passes on Kaiser for the lead on the low side off of corner number two and down the back straightaway; however, Kaiser's car was on a rail on the high side into and out of corners three and four as he maintained his lead.  At the conclusion of the race it was Kaiser who picked up the $1,000 payday and his first ULMA-sanctioned win of the season.  Allison sealed the second position with Barker third and Lorton fourth.  Robbie Test passed Kevin Coyne late in the event for fifth place as Coyne settled for sixth position and the $150 bonus for being the driver who most improved his position; Coyne started the race thirteenth.  Rounding at the top ten were King, McGraw, Tommy Cordray, and Marty Pope.

Above story by Sam Stoecklin reprinted from ULMA Media Relations

In the night's earlier A-modified race, Mark VanWinkle looked as if he had a win coming his way in this caution-free race of 15 laps.  But when the Hannibal front runner got into the back of the lapped cars, David Holder of Clarence, took advantage of a blocking on the backstretch at the 13th lap and slid up to get to the front of the lead lap.  All Holder needed was to finish up front on the remaining lap and a half and get his 2nd win in 2 weeks.  Van Winkle had led the race up until then, but had to settle for 2nd, just ahead of Kirksville's Kelly Smith.  These three had started off the competition in a 3-wide race to see who would take over that lead.

And In the B-modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Hornet classes, it was good to get to the front on lap 1, as all three classes saw only one car lead their respective races.  With only two cautions in the 15-lap race, Blake David of Fulton led from the outside pole start, over Hallsville's Galen Hassler (2nd) and Holliday's Gary Wilson (3rd).  The Hobbys ran a caution-free event and saw Tim Dawson of Callao go to the front to stay, after another of these 3-wide starts alongside Centralia's Clayton Crump and Pulaski, Iowa's Dale Porter.  Hornet Driver Brooke Hassler from Columbia, also ran up front for all the laps in their own caution-free race of the night, finishing ahead of Clark's Rob Chase.  The close racing was for 3rd between Devin Still of Anabel and Robert Winfrey of Moberly, with Still pulling out the 3rd place finish.

Derrick Agee of Huntsville and Andrew Page of Columbia put on the show for the Sportsman lead, with Page leading the first 5 laps and Agee taking the last 7.  With only a single caution, double-file restart, Agee came on for his 2nd win of the season, pulling away on the white flag lap 11.  Page took 2nd ahead of the Walter brothers from Clarence, Casey in 3rd and Chad in 4th.  It looked as if Page would be awarded the win when a post-race technical inspection found suspension components to be of question on the 1st, 3rd & 4th place cars.  After review and clarification of the IMCA rules, (the rules that the 24 Raceway rules are closely modeled after), the finish was left to stand as originally scored.  Both Page and Agee were to be paid 1st place money, and the Walter cars to get their 3rd and 4th place prize, while leaving Tim Eravi and Steve Dieckmann also with their 3rd & 4th place monies.  Clarifications in the Sportsman rules regarding suspension materials are to be forthcoming at the next driver's meeting, with the components in question to be considered in complience.
