MOBERLY, MO (June 9) - The rescheduled Hornet Special took place at 24 Raceway after being rained out five weeks earlier, and for the 3rd week, Rob Chase had the Hornet to beat. Chase led 19 of the 20 laps with another strong performance in this one. Just as in the previous two weeks, the Clark resident started from the front row as a result of winning his heat race. Coming out of turn 1, Devin Still, Robert Winfrey, Chase and Mike Denslow all battled for leading lap 1, with Still grabbing only that one lap. Three cautions slowed the race in the early going, but after lap 6, it was Kristi Chase working her way up there with those other four Hornets and holding onto 2nd for all but the final 4 laps. Winfrey got around her after a lap 16 caution from another Hornet hitting the turn 4 outside wall and then backing into the inside wall. On the restart, Winfrey reclaimed 2nd and finished there in between the husband and wife drivers in this class. Kevin Blackburn of Fulton came back to the high banks of 24 Raceway in the A-Modified owned by Alan McCormick, after having a not-too-good showing on opening night here, back on April 11. Hannibal's Mark VanWinkle led the first 19 laps of this caution-free race, but couldn't hold off Blackburn for the final one, and had to settle for 2nd. Blackburn kept working up through the ranks until pulling off the last lap pass coming out of the final turn. Porter Collins of Clarence had a strong racecar, leading all of the heat laps, and ran in 2nd early on in the 20-lap race, but finished in 3rd. The top three Sportsman drivers ran in an extremely tight 1-2-3 order for the entire 12 laps, with Rick Girard leading all the laps in this caution-free event. The Columbia driver got a few taps from Moberly's Tim Eravi late in the race as these two ran nose-to-tail, right along with Huntsville's Derrick Agee, at speeds above 80 mph on the half mile track. Girard never budged from the lead and led all laps from his pole position start. The Hobby Stocks also ran their race in a caution-free mode, with Tom Creed of Moberly grabbing the lead from the start and stretching out a comfortable interval over Kevin Renzelmann, who got 2nd. Marvin Kinyon took 3rd in his best finish to date. And in his second year of competing in the B-Modified class, Galen Hassler of Hallsville was one excited 1st time winner this Saturday, following three successive weeks of 2nd place finishes. It looked as if if was going to be a fourth 2nd place finish for Hassler, but a final lap spin by a racecar in turn 1 and resulting caution took Kiel Erwin out of what looked like a sure win, and this would have been his first also. Erwin had a tire go down during the yellow flag laps and fell out of contention for the green-white-checker finish. Tyler Lewis of Columbia, subbing for another Hallsville driver, put that car across the finish line for 2nd, just barely ahead of Blake David, the leader for the middle 6 laps. Special thanks to
Moberly's Shelby Alshire for handling the trophy presentations following the
wins, and also to Rylee Kendrick of Macon for singing of the National Anthem
to start off the night's racing schedule. Congrats to Ida Archer of
Kirksville for taking home the 50-50 pot of $97. Not a bad night's take.
