WISON PULLS OFF LAST LAP PASS TO
WIN A-MODIFIED FEATURE AT 24 RACEWAY - USMTS SHOW UP NEXT WEEK MOBERLY, MO (August 4) - After a three-wide start to the
A-modified race between the three winners of their respective heats, Porter
Collins, Kevin Blackburn and David Holder settled into running up front
along with Matt Dotson and Gary Blackburn for the first few laps. Holder
got into the lead for almost all the laps from the 2nd one on, with these
five drivers keeping it close, even with a few cautions. Then by the 5th
lap, Vance Wilson had worked his way up to 5th, just edging out Gary
Blackburn at the line. Wilson was in and out of the top five, until lap 9
when he took over running in 2nd, just behind Holder and stayed there for
the next 10 laps. Wilson pulled off an exciting last lap - final turn pass
of Holder to get his 2nd win at 24 Raceway this season, to go with his
Firecracker Forty win on July 11. Kevin Blackburn came in 3rd, but a
non-race incident in the pit area by the racecar's owner resulted in his
disqualification, and thereby moving Dotson up to a 3rd place finish, just
ahead of Gary Blackburn. David Munoz got the best finish of his career,
coming in 5th in the field of 21 cars. The B-modifieds ran their 15 laps
without any cautions, with Bobby Woodrow winning in his return to 24 Raceway
for only his 2nd race of the season. After winning his heat and leading all
the laps in the feature, former B-Mod season champ Woodrow got his first
win, saying he really likes the racetrack! Last week's winner Galen Hassler
came in just behind Woodrow after assuming that position from the 2nd lap
on. But after a post-race engine claim by another B-Mod driver/owner
and following the guidelines for making such a claim, Hassler denied the
claim and thereby set into motion a dq, forfeit of the 2nd place finish and
the points that went with it. In addition and accordance with those
claiming rules posted on the website, Hassler is required to sit out a 2
week stretch and later, got another 2 week suspension from further verbal
actions in the pit area. He dropped out of the lead for season points, with
Gary Wilson moving into a 2nd place finish, ahead of Brian Robinson and Chad
Lebsock. Wilson and Lebsock are now tied for the points lead, with Hassler
dropping back to 3rd, only 10 points ahead of Robinson. With just two races
to go in the season points standings, this B-modified class has the closest
competion of the five classes. Rick Girard took his pole position for the 3rd succesive week in the Sportsman class and led for the first three laps over fellow front row starter, Jeff Creed. Then Creed assumed the lead for the next 3 laps, until Derreck Agee came on to lead from lap 7 on. Kelly Smith took over the high lane on lap 8 for a move into 2nd and from there on, it was a side by side race, with Smith running up high and Agee on the low side but always crossing the line ahead of Smith. The finish had Agee, Smith and Creed coming in 1st, 2nd & 3rd with a couple of yellow flags in there too. Charlie Rindom and Andrew Page finished out the top five. Girard maintained his position as points leader for the Sportsman class, even though a flat tire put him back to a 7th place finish in this week's feature. Tom Creed got back into the win column in the Hobby Stock class after more than a month since his last win on June 27th. Tim Dawson ran nose-to-tail with Creed the entire race as Creed led all the laps in a two-car break away from the others. Chase Breid had 3rd for the first half of the race, with Alan Hultz grabbing it for the 2nd half and finishing there, a comfortable distance ahead of Mike Wolfe and Chad Walter for 4th and 5th. The Hornet class saw a five-car break away with Robert Winfrey getting to the lead from a front row start. Winfrey, Devin Still, Rob Chase, Kristi Chase and Brooke Hassler raced as a group and a lot of it in two-wide formation. This was their finishing order as these five lined up this way from lap 3 on. Winfrey led all 12 of the laps in this caution-free race, but still trails Rob Chase and the other three in season points. After the feature racing had ended, a mechanic's race, this week for the A-modifieds, was held with six entries in the final class of these for the season. And the "mechanic" coming through to finish the six laps in record time was Gary Wilson in the 88D-car of Matt Dotson's, just ahead of Andrew Page in Brian Troxel's racecar.
