SHELTON, AGEE, DAWSON, CHASE ALSO WIN AT 24 RACEWAY;
MLRA RETURNS FOR NEXT WEEK
by Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway
MOBERLY, MO (August 11) - It took three heats this weekend to set the
starting grid for the 21 B-modifieds to race in their feature at 24 Raceway.
Gary Lewis and Mike Shelten got the front row positions from their efforts
in the first two heats, while 13-year old Cayden Carter came from Oskaloosa,
IA to try his skills here in Moberly, starting in row 2 alongside Jacob
Grotewiel in his best starting position yet. Racing at Moberly takes a bit
of getting used to that outside concrete wall and on lap 2, Carter got
familiar with it in turns 1 & 2. His night was completed, retiring to the
pit area with enough damage to keep him from returning. No caution flag came
out for this indcident, and actually the entire 15 lap race did not have a
single yellow flag fly. Lewis moved into 2nd, right behind Bloomfield,
Iowa's Shelten for the first 8 laps, but Chad Lebsock kept giving Lewis a
challenge for most of that time early on. Lebsock took 2nd away from Lewis
on lap 11, by running low as Lewis took to the higher lane. And as these two
were doing their side by side racing, Shelten was running off with the lead
by at least six car-lengths. Shelten cruised to an easy win, with Lebsock
holding onto 2nd, followed by Lewis, then another Iowa driver, Carter
Vandenberg, as 5th place went to last week's winner Bob Woodrow. Great
racing in a caution-free event!
The Sportsman class also had great competition in their feature without any
cautions flags flying. Early on, it was Derrick Agee running the low lane
and Rick Girard racing up higher on the track. Agee led the first 2 laps,
Girard got the 3rd lap, and Agee took the rest of 'em as these two did the
side by side racing for the entire 12 laps! They would trade off leads on
the back stretch, but at the line, it looked almost a tie for most of the
late laps, with Agee getting credit for the lead from the scoring
department. Andrew Page and Randy Rindom were back in a battle for 3rd that
saw Page hold that positioin for the entire race. That low lane proved to be
the key for Agee, as Girard settled into 2nd, followed by Page and Rindom.
It was a back-to-back win for Agee.
Tim Dawson, Clayton Crump and Tom Creed ran as a 1-2-3 threesome in a
break-away from the rest of the field in the Hobby Stock class, until a late
race caution on lap 10 bunched up the group of ten racecars. From there, it
was a green-white-checkers finish with Dawson leading Crump, Creed, Chase
Breid and Nathan Stevenson to the finish line. Dawson stated it was a "great
run on a great track" as he led the entire way to his 4th win of 2009.
In the Hornet class, it seemed to be all Devin Still early in this race as
he got the jump on Kristi Chase from their front row starting positions. Rob
Chase and Brooke Hassler battled behind him for 2nd, with Chase running up
high while Hassler ran down low. Midway through the 12 lap race, R.Chase got
into position to challenge Still by now taking over the low lane while Still
stayed in the high one as they entered the rear of the field. Hassler and
Richard Doctorian were doing their own racing for 3rd by similar low
lane/high lane competition. Still led all the laps but the important one in
this feature, as Rob Chase pulled into a last lap lead at the finish line in
their two car breakaway. Chase was the only one of the 24 Raceway's season
points leaders from the five classes to pull off a win on this evening.
