MOBERLY, MO (September 1) - A-modified driver, Colt Mather, made the trek south from Iowa for just his 3rd race of 2009 at 24 Raceway, and got a 2nd win out of it that entry over 22 other A-mods. For the first three laps, both front row starters, Mather and Mark VanWinkle moved out from the pack and Mather took the lead on the 4th lap. After a couple of cautions on the 5th lap and a restart, Mather continued to lead, even through the 3rd yellow flag on lap 16, getting his 2nd win out of three tries at Moberly. VanWinkle tried but couldn't get back into the lead, holding down 2nd place from that 4th lap to the end. Porter Collins stayed in 3rd pretty much the entire race, while Matt Dotson worked his way up to finish in 4th after a start in the middle of the pack at row 6. Lonnie Wyman, Jr. rounded out the top five. The 71-car team owned by Alan McCormick and using the two different drivers of David Holder (first 4 races & 2 wins) and Kevin Blackburn (9 races & 3 wins), took the season points championship by some 36 over Collins, even with Blackburn coming in almost last in this one. Bob Woodrow got to lead the first 5 laps of the B-modified race, but on lap 6, Jason McDaniel took over in front of the pack of 23 racecars and got to be the 2nd Iowa driver of the night to take the checkers. Chad Lebsock stayed with McDaniel but settled for 2nd, just ahead of Tom Elsen. Vance Wilson, doing some double duty modified driving, brought the Maxey-owed B-mod up to 4th, while Chad Hickam finished in 5th ahead of Woodrow. McDaniel got to the winner's circle in his first visit and said "Quite a Track" at the post-race interview. Lebsock locked up the 2009 points standings, helped out by winning 3 races for the season. Gary Wilson followed in 2nd by some 46 points behind Lebsock. In the Sportsman class, a 3-wide start, the 01-car of Jeff Creed getting taken out in turn 3 before a lap got in the books, and another 3-wide start by the same threesome of Butch Bailey, Andrew Page and Derrick Agee had lots of emotions brewing. Bailey got the lead for a couple of laps and then tangled in turn 3 with Agee, sending both to the tail of the pack. Chad Walter got to lead after the restart, but by the halfway point, previous winner, Rick Girard moved up to the front and led the rest of the way. Kelly Smith moved on up to 2nd with 3 laps to go and finished ahead of Casey Walter, and then Andrew Page in 4th. On the last lap, Agee and Bailey tangled yet again in turn 3, collecting Chad Walter and Michael Kinzle in the melee, with both Bailey and Agee getting the ole "dq", the first from on-track actions, and the latter from an off-track incident in the pit area. Both drivers lost their night's points and winnings for their actions, per application of the published General Rules of the 24 Raceway track. And by giving up his night's winnings of 14 points, Agee dropped in the season points standings to 3rd, behind Page and then, the 2009 season champion, Girard, with his four victories. The brew-ha-ha by a crew member in the pit area following the night's events also cost Agee a two week suspension from racing at the track, also in accordance with the General Rules. Agee is the driver with the most wins in the Sportsman class with six for the 2009 season. The Hobby Stocks started off with a spinning car in turn 1, but the restart saw the cars of Clayton Crump and Alan Hultz running nose to tail in tight formation for the entire 12 lap race, while Chase Breid and Tom Creed did the same in 3rd & 4th as these four broke away from the pack to run out front without any further yellows. Crump led all 12 laps in this one, with Hultz, Breid, Creed and Jerry Warren finishing in that order. Crump stated that the track "is a fun place to race". Creed picked up the season championship by virture of his six wins to Crump's three, even though these two teams tied in points at the end of the night (and season). The number of wins is used as the first factor in determining of the tie-breaker. Rob Chase had the most wins of all five classes at 24 Raceway this season by winning 9 and picking up that 9th win on this night. Chase led laps 1 & 2, then Devin Still took over for lap 3, Chase led again on lap 4, Still on lap 5, but from then on it was all Chase. The only caution came on the white flag lap with Cody Melloway and John Baker hooking up, side by side and turning into the inside wall on the front stretch. On the restart, Brooke Hassler got a great jump and moved from running in 5th to a 3rd place finish, behind Still and the winner, Chase. In doing so, Hassler tied for 2nd in points with Still, some 64 behind Chase. Following the night's five classes and determination of the 2009 Season Point Champions, the annual ssautosport.com All Star race was held. Winners of this extra event, not only will get their car's picture on the website banner, but also received a complimentary bottle of Pig-in-a-Polka meat rub. Due to the time, the five races for those qualifiers were shortened to 5 laps. In addition to those previously listed teams that finished in the top 5 in season points and drivers having won a feature during the 2009 season, there were four additional qualifiers from teams winning in the night's heat races. Colt Mather's #8 car posted the A-mod win in this special race, Chad Lebsock got the 5-lap B-mod win with his 29L-car, and Rick Girard doubled up with the Sportsman All Star race win too, in his 00-racecar. Chase Breid led all 5 laps in the Hobbys to get his car's picture on the website for the next year, and Rob Chase pulled off a clean sweep of winning this All Star race, the heat race and the feature on this evening. Colt Mather did the same in the A-modified class. Both the Church Bulletin night, getting folks in for just $5 with a recent bulletin, and Autism Awareness night received many positive comments throughout the grandstand area. Plenty of racefans took part in purchase of the black tee-shirts and hoodies, and gave to the drivers passing the helmets for the support of families with autism and mainly, to benefit their support group of TouchPoint of central Missouri. Thanks to all who gave. And the 24 Raceway Cookbook is still an on-going drive to collect recipes for assembling into a book form for sale later.
