MOBERLY, MO. (Sept 15) - The 2009 B-modified Championship Shootout at 24 Raceway saw Bobby Woodrow get his 2nd win for the season at the track, this time over 26 other B-mod entries in the MHC Kenworth sponsored 30 lap feature. Gary Wilson, Tom Elsen and Brian Robinson had the fast cars in their respective heat wins, with the first two getting the front row starting positions. These three made an impressive three-wide start into the first two turns, with Elsen coming out in front, a post he held for the first 7 laps through 3 cautions and restarts. Galen Hassler came on strong and ovetook Wilson for the 2nd position by lap 4, and then going into the lead on lap 8. A fourth caution on lap 10, and Elsen found his way back into the lead on the lap 11 restart for another 4 laps with Bob Woodrow following into 2nd. Elsen looked like he had the B-modified to beat, but going into turn 2 just a bit too hard on lap 14 cost him the race with a spinout. Just before that, Woodrow had been challenging for the lead and these two were putting on a show ! Elsen's spin collected Hassler and another B-mod down low, with a pair of fuel fires bringing on a red flag. With the fires addressed and both Elsen and Hassler being towed off, the race resumed with Woodrow in front and the B-modified champ for 2009, Chad Lebsock, running right behind, followed by Wilson, and then Kevin Embree in 4th. And these were the top 4 at the 20-lap mark, where only the top ten moved on to the Shootout part of the custom race format. A ten minute stop for fuel, tire adjustments and driver re-draws ensued. Vance Wilson came in at 6th and pulled the #1 starting spot on his re-draw. Cody Erwin got the outside front row spot with the #2 draw; Embree drew #3 and Tyler Lewis got #4 to complete the 2nd row; Mark Botts pulled a #5 spot and Chad Hickam filled out third row with a #6 re-draw; Woodrow, Lewis, G.Wilson and Kiel Erwin re-drew in that order for the final two rows to set up the ten-car grid. Back in the racecars, these ten made a practice lap before the green dropped for the final 10-lap shootout. Embree got the best of the start, moving from row 2 into the lead for laps 21 thru 24, and running side by side with Woodrow at times. On the 25th lap, they swapped positions before a spin by V.Wilson brought out a yellow flag. After the restart for the final five laps, it was all Woodrow, with Embree keeping that 2nd position in his intital return to racing at 24 Raceway for this 2009 season. Lewis held on to a 3rd place finish with the next 3 cars racing all the way, side by side by side to the line. Gary Wilson got the 4th spot by going for the high line, with Lebsock using the middle of the track and Hickam holding down the low lane to come in 6th. Woodrow picked up a cool $1000 for his effort in this race, dedicated as the Bob Hubert Memorial race, and sponsored by the folks from MHC Kenworth trucks of Columbia. Earlier, the A-modifieds had their 20 lap race as Vance Wilson did some double duty this night, taking the heat race and feature wins in this one. Vance led all the laps in both, as Danny Crane came in and gave Wilson a good challenge at times. By midway thru the race, Crane had faded back to 4th, as David Holder moved into 2nd, just ahead of Matt Dotson. Holder headed into the pits on lap 12, leaving Dotson and Crane jockeying for 2nd. Crane grabbed that spot by lap 15, but Dotson got back around him once more. Wilson was just too strong to overtake, but on the final lap, Crane did make his move on Dotson and made it stick as he finished in 2nd. Dotson got 3rd and Virgil Jeffery came in 4th. A tight race early on in the Sportsman class, had Kelly Smith leading the Walter brothers, Chad and Casey, for 7 laps. These guys will run nose-to-tail at speeds of 90+, doing some rubbing and tapping. And it's usually interesting to watch. But Smith's engine expired, sending him into the pit area and Chad Walter taking over the lead. Casey Walter started having wall and tire problems just a couple laps later and also exited into the pits with a pair of right side flats. Chad Walter took it from there on a green-white-checkers finish, with Jeff Creed coming up to take over 2nd, and Randy Rindom moving on up to 3rd. In the Hobby Stocks, Clayton Crump finished in first by leading all 12 laps for the 2nd consecutive race at 24 Raceway. Chase Breid had been racing in 2nd and getting challenged by Tim Dawson. On a late race restart, Dawson finally got aroung Breid and came in 2nd, relegating Breid to 3rd.
Rob Chase won his 3rd consecutive 4 cylinder Hornet class race by leading all the laps, in both the heat race and feature. Devin Still followed in 2nd, with Brooke Hassler holding off Kristi Chase in some close racing to come in 3rd. The number 3-car was the one to watch for the night, as that's the car number that won in the B-mod Shootout, as well as the Hobby Stock and Hornet races. Congrats to all who competed! The 24 Raceway Cookbook is still an on-going drive to collect recipes for assembling into a book form for sale later. When at the track, pick up a form to fill out or bring your recipe to the registration table for entry into the weekly give-aways in the grandstand area.
