VANCE WILSON KICKS OFF ANOTHER SEASON BY LEADING 'EM ALL AT 24 RACEWAY

by Ron Lueck

MOBERLY, MO (April 20) -  Vance Wilson returns to 24 Raceway with a vengence after missing the cut in the previous week's USMTS, and dominates by winning the heat, and then leading all 20 laps in the first points race for A-modifieds in 2010 on this April 17th.  Matt and Mark Dotson provided some keen competition and had a good race jockeying for 2nd early on.  Mark Dotson moved into the 2nd slot by lap 4 and held off nephew Matt for the first part and then, had to hold off David Holder for the 2nd half of this feature.  Following Wilson to the finish,  were Mark Dotson, then David Holder with Matt Dotson rounding out the top four.  Steve Grotz came in 5th in his return to Moberly after some time away at other area tracks and introduced his son to racing at the high banks of 24 Raceway.  Now, on lap 15, Moberly's David Kinder pulled an exciting exit to the high-banked track in the middle of turn 1, by going over the wall and slamming his new A-mod into the flagpole at the south end, causing the race to be red-flagged.  He hit the pole about 12 feet in the air and with his driver's door, landing about half-way down the outside embankment.  The flagpole snapped off about half way up.  After a short exam by the on-site EMT's, Kinder was taken for some x-rays at the local Hospital, where he was determined to have broken a rib.  He returned to the track later in the evening, and hungry for one those sought-after grilled burgers.

A total of 72 cars were on hand for this cool night of April racing in Moberly, MO.  In the night's finale, a long-time competitor from Paris in the popular B-modified class, Kevin Embree, got a win by persevering and staying in the top 5 for the entire race.  Just when it looked as if Chad Hickam had the race won, a caution flag flew for the 6th time, setting up a green-white-checkers finish.  Hickam took over the lead on lap 3 and held it through the cautions with a strong showing, but on the final restart, Embree got around Hickam and into the lead for those last two laps.  Although it's been a bit of time between wins, Embree knew his way to the winner's circle.  Embree won his heat and dropped only as low as 5th in the feature on lap 9 but came back to a crowd-entertaining win, with Hickam coming in at 2nd, Kiel Erwin 3rd and Charlie Rindom taking 4th.

In earlier race action, the Sportsman class saw pole winner Chad Walter, come out to a lead over the other front row starter, Derrick Agee.  But a bit of bad timing by another car entering the track, blocked out Walter, and allowed Agee the lead on lap 3, who then had to exit with tire and rear end problems after lap 5.  It was there on lap 6 that Jeff Creed made the move in front of Walter for the lead and held it for the final 7 laps.  Creed, who started from the back of the field due to missing the heat race, put his Sportsman car thru the paces to stay in front of a hungry Walter.  Walter, who had to settle for 2nd, had his hands fill keeping ahead of Rick Girard running in a strong 3rd position.  And younger brother Cody Agee picked up his best finish to date, coming in 4th on a great last lap pass of Butch Bailey.

Centralia's Clayton Crump once again led all laps in the second heat and in the feature, with Nathan Stevenson charging thru the field to grab a runner-up spot in the Hobby Stock class.  Still need more entries in this class and these should be forthcoming.  The Hornet class saw Rob Chase get back into the groove of his winning ways by doing the same as Crump, leading all the heat laps and feature laps in a dominant performance.  The other Hornet heat winner and front row starter in the feature, Robert Winfrey, held onto 2nd all the way to the finish in this one.
