HOLDER MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW AT 24 RACEWAY TAKING THE A-MODIFIED

FIRECRAKER 40 FEATURE, AS MARTIN GETS THE WIN IN W.O.W. SPRINTS

by Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway

MOBERLY, MO (July 6) - The Firecracker Forty came off with a half dozen cautions in a great race, but the W.O.W. Sprint race had only a single one in some 3-wide and 4-wide racing in the Bob Whitehead Memorial this last Saturday night at 24 Raceway this last weekend.

RACE REPORT:   Some heavy hitters were in town for the 6th annual Bob Whitehead Memorial Firecracker Forty, with Michael Long, David Holder, Kevin Blackburn, Danny Crane and both Matt & Tim Dotson getting the top starting positions.  Up there amoung these guys was Chase Bried starting a feature from the front row for his first time in an A-modified at 24 Raceway, a result of the strong showing he made in the 2nd of the three heat races.  In a pre-race meeting, there was an agreement to shorten the show to 30 laps to assist in a fuel saving measure.  With the cautions spaced out at almost equal intervals, Michael Long had a strong run from the drop of the green flag, but succumbed to David Holder as a 2nd caution took place on the front stretch.  Holder looked strong too, as both Long and Kevin Blackburn were in a battle, trading for the 2nd position in the early parts of the race.  With Danny Crane dropping out during the 3rd caution, Matt Dotson moved into contention and Steve Grotz was in that mix too.  Later on in the middle parts of the race, Long could only get close while running in 2nd in the curves as Holder moved out on the straights.  Blackburn kept the 3rd place during the later third of the race, and Darin Walker came on to challenge for 4th with Grotz.  Holder held the lead for the remainder, as Long could only settle for 2nd, ahead of Blackburn.  And in the final two laps, Walker took over 4th for good as Grotz dropped back to 5th.

The W.O.W. 360 Sprints came in for their 2nd show of the 2010 season at 24 Raceway and had 17 sprints on hand for this 20-lap race part of the Bob Whitehead Memorial.  The crowd got to view some excellent 3-wide and 4-wide racing in this one, as Randy Martin got his car in position to lead each lap on the half-mile track.  Only one caution during this entire race, from the event's namesake, grandson Jordan Whitehead, losing power and coasting into the pit early on.  Tyler Blank and Jonathan Cornell were mixing it up behind Martin, and both could get close to him once they all got into lapped traffic a couple of times.  But once these three cleared the pack, Martin was off and out front again.  Marting never trailed in this one, as Blank came across the line in 2nd and Cornell finished in 3rd.  Jon Corbin, also always a contender here in Moberly, grabbed 4th and Eric Todd finished out the top five.

The B-modifieds had a familiar face in the flagstand, as guest flagger Greg Embree returned to Moberly for an appearance at the Track.  Long-time flagman for this half-mile track, Embree always makes it a point to plan a visit from Atlanta when the Whitehead Memorial is held, and usually agrees to be in the flagstand, after some needling.  Tom Elsen was the one leading the competition in this 15-lap race, as the other front row starter Kelly Smith, gave it all he could, but also was busy holding off Gary Wilson for 2nd.  This threesome of Elsen, Smith and Wilson could run off from the pack after the cautions, while Kevin Embree and Chad Lebsock were doing battle for 4th.  In the time-shortened race, the top three remained unchanged, but Bob Woodrow came up to grab 4th, with Kiel Erwin taking the 5th spot.

In the 4 cylinder Hornet class, there was a three-wide start with the front row of Robert Winfrey and Devin Still being joined by last week's winner, John Baker.  Winfrey got to the line on the first and each successive of the 12 laps, as Still and Baker were trading off on the runner-up spot early on in the race.  In the end, Baker held that 2nd place for most of the laps, with Still keeping his 3rd spot.  John Doctorian and Casey Kendrick completed the top five in that order.
