MCCALLA TOPS SPORTSMEN WITH FINAL LAP PASS DENNIS DIERCKS TOPS LEGENDS

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA  (Aug 17, 2012) – A huge “Caseys General Stores Night” crowd was treated to an entertaining night of racing Friday night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway . Caseys and Pepsi teamed up to provide complimentary admission to fans purchasing a Pepsi product at their neighborhood Caseys store. All six divisions of the Papa johns Cup/ i-Wireless Championship Series were action on the last week of racing before season championships.

The Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stocks feature saw multiple leaders before Brad Chandler claimed the checkers. Derek Parrott led the first seven laps before Blake Carson took command on lap eight. Point leader Matt Petrzelka was right on Carsons tail and took a very brief lead on lap nine however the caution flag cancelled the pass.

Petrzelka and Brad Chandler kept the pressure on when green flag racing resumed. A spin by Carson was ruled to be caused by Petrzelka with Carson keeping his spot and Petrzelka restarting from the rear. The battle continued up front with Chandler wrestling the lead from carson with just two laps to go. Carson finished second while Roland Bohnsack was third. Petrzelka, the point leader, finished fourth.

In Mountain Dew Sportsmen, Bob Ahrendsen and point leader Dave McCalla traded the lead back and forth in the 15-lap feature with McCalla leading the lap that counted at the end of the race. Ahrendsen led the early laps before McCalla pulled alongside on lap six and then took the lead on lap seven. Ahrendsen fought back and the duo raced side by side for multiple laps before ahrendsen regained the lead on lap eleven.

On lap twelve, the 83 car of Ben Glascock spun bunching the field for the restart. Green flag racing resumed with Ahrendsen maintaining the lead but McCalla mounting a final charge. McCalla was side-by-side with Ahrendsen with two laps to go and on the final lap McCalla made the winning pass, motoring past Ahrendsen using an outside move. Ahrendsen finished second and Brian Gibson was third.

Jake Griffin scored his fifth win of the season in Budweiser Modifieds in relatively easy fashion after taking the lead from Dave McCalla on lap eight. The best battle of the race was for second as Brian Gibson, Ryan Luedtke, and McCalla slugged it out for the spot. With eight laps remaining  second was still up for grabs. Three laps later,  Gibson put heavy pressure on McCalla for the second spot and Gibson finally secured the second slot with just two laps to go. While the battle for second was on Griffin continued to build his lead eventually winning the race by almost a full straightaway. Ryan Luedtke slipped around McCalla on the final lap to claim the third spot.

Kurt Bohnsack scored a relatively easy win in the Sunline Hornets feature taking an early lead, navigating safely through lapped traffic, and motoring to his fourth win of 2012 and keeping the pressure on point leader Shane Hanson. There was plenty of action behind the leader as well with Brad Chandler prevailing to claim second. Dan Schmidt posted his best run of the year to finish third. Todd Ness was fourth and Dallas Chandler crossed the stripe in fifth.

Dennis Diercks actually found himself in victory lane twice Friday night as he won the Anderson Automotive Trophy Dash to start out the night and then later won the 20-lap Dublin City Pub Legends feature event.

Diercks started in row two, took the lead on the first lap and by lap five had built a fairly comfortable lead. However, by the halfway mark point leader Kevin Korsmo was coming fast. With eight laps to go Diercks, Korsmo, and Rod McGlothlen were running nose to tail but neither of the cars chasing Diercks could mount a serious charge. Korsmo tried a final charge on the last lap but came up a bit short as Diercks snatched the checkered flag. Korsmo, McGlothlen, Bryce Bailey, and Caleb Adrian all scored in the top five.

Finally, in Performance Concepts Late Models, point leader Thor Anderson snatched the lead from Brad Osborn on lap twelve after battling Osborn for two laps and then cruised to his sixth win of the season. Griffin McGrath followed Anderson around Osborn finishing third, holding off Joey Gase for that position. The race was slowed by a trio of cautions but each time Anderson was able to pull away again.

Dudley Fleck also motored around Osborn in the final laps to finish fourth while Osborn had to settle for fifth.

Next Friday night, August 24, is the final event of the regular season- Barron Motor Supply Season Championships. Season champions will be crowned in all six divisions.
