Aikey becomes 4th winner in IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series
Dana Royer/34 Raceway
by: Dana Royer
West Burlington, Ia (April 22, 2006) - Jeff Aikey, Cedar Falls, became the
newest winner in four races of the IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series last
Saturday night. The 34 Raceway event which was rescheduled from its original
April 8 date drew 43 cars to the 3/8 mile track. Other winners on the evening
were Dennis LaVeine, Burlington (A-Modifieds), Adam Davis, Washington (B-Mods),
Kirk Kinsley, Wapello, (Stock Cars) and John Oliver, Jr., Danville, (Hobby
Stocks).
With four IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series races under its belt, Jeff Aikey
became the fourth winner of the series last Saturday at 34 Raceway. Following
the qualifying races including 5 heats and two B-Mains the twenty-four car field
was set with Eric Gustaf and Rob Toland sitting on the front row. Gustaf took an
early short-lived lead before giving it up to Toland on lap three of the 40 lap
feature. Toland then had to work for the next fourteen laps to hold off Jay
Johnson of West Burlington. Johnsonıs strong run ended when he was forced to pit
with a flat tire on lap twenty allowing Aikey to move into the second spot.
Toland continued to hold a strong lead but a caution on lap twenty seven would
cut his lead. Aikey got a good jump on the restart and got past Toland his first
lead of the race. Aikey then pulled away and went on to take the checkered for
his 46th win in the tour series. Rounding out the top five would be Toland, Mark
Preston, Eric Gustaf and Terry Neal, the defending series champion. ³The track
was awesome² stated Aikey following the race after getting his 4th win at 34
Raceway. Aikey now leads the series points with 195 followed by Toland with 192,
Terry Neal, 182 and Boone McLaughlin 176. Previous 2006 series winners include
Rob Toland, Boone McLaughlin and Terry Neal.
Dennis LaVeine, Burlington, won the first points race of the season for the IMCA
Modifieds. LaVeine took the lead from Chris Larson, Keokuk, on lap six of the
twenty lap modified feature to get his first win at 34 Raceway this year.
LaVeine was being chased by Bill Roberts, Jr. but was able to hold on to his
comfortable lead for the win. Roberts finished second with Chris Larson and Andy
Krieger rounding out the top four.
Washingtonıs Adam Davis, coming off a win in the A-Mods last week, cruised to a
feature win in the B-Mods this week. Davis took the lead at the drop of the
green. Jerry Bliesener would give Davis a challenge narrowing the gap midway
through the fifteen lapper but couldnıt couldnıt catch the leader settling for
second. Frankie Wellman and Jim Kuhlmeier rounded out he top four.
Making their first appearance at 34 Raceway this year is the newly added IMCA
Stock Cars. After the 2005 season track owner Johnny Johnson elected to
discontinue the 2 person thunder cars and add the popular stock cars. Jeff
Mueller, Mt. Pleasant, took the lead early and was never seriously challenged as
he went on to take the checkered flag in the fifteen lap race. But following the
race Mueller would be disqualified following and engine tech for an illegal
carburetor. The win was then given to last yearıs track champion, Kirk Kinsley
who finished second. Rod Staats, John Oliver, Jr. and Chad Witte followed.
Doing double duty in both hobby stocks and stock cars would be John Oliver, Jr.,
Danville. After finishing third in the stock car feature, Oliver then raced back
out for the hobby stock main event where he took the checkered flag. Oliver led
from start to finish gaining a sizeable lead. With Oliver out in front a battle
for second would go on between Dan Wenig, Chad Krogmeier and Todd Holsteen. As
Oliver took the checkered flag, Dan Wenig would finish third followed by
Holsteen and and Jake Wenig.
Coming Up Coming up this Saturday will be the first points race for the IMCA
Late Models as well as point races for IMCA Modifieds, B-Mods, IMCA Stock Cars
and Hobby Stocks on H & L Mack Night. Donıt forget to bring the kids. Ages 10
and under are admitted free.
