Kinsley inches out Stock Car win over Oliver; Foster gets flag
to flag modified win
Dana Royer/34 Raceway
WEST BURLINGTON, Ia. (May 20, 2006) - After taking a week off from racing action
due to rain it was back to the track at 34 Raceway with nearly 100 cars in the
pit area. Four of the five classes saw new winners in victory lane this week.
Getting their first wins for the year at 34 were Boone McLaughlin, Mediapolis
(IMCA Late Model), Josh Foster, Montrose (IMCA Modifieds), Wyatt Lantz, Bowen,
Il., (B-Mods), and Luke McLaughlin, Mediapolis (hobby stocks). Getting his
second win for the year was Kirk Kinsley, Wapello, (IMCA Stock
Cars)
Twenty three IMCA late models took to the track for their feature race with
Boone McLaughlin and Colby Springsteen leading the pack. McLaughlin took the
early lead with a battle for the second spot going on behind him. On lap
fourteen a red flag came out for Cory Richards who rolled on the back stretch
ending his night. Tom Darbyshire took a brief lead on the restart but McLaughlin
would get it back on the next lap. With Boone out in front the battle for second
would go on between Darbyshire, Russell and Robert Toland in the remaining laps.
Darbyshire would win the battle as he crossed the finish line behind McLaughlin
who took the checkered, his first this year at 34 Raceway.
Josh Foster, Montrose, came back this week after a DQ on May 6 to win the flag
to flag, caution free, IMCA modified feature. Foster took the lead from his
front row start and never looked back pulling away in the eighteen car field.
Foster had a close call on lap eighteen of the twenty lapper nearly bumping a
lapped car on the front stretch. He then went on to take the checkered flag by a
large margin. After Foster pulled out on the front stretch for his feature win
photo he jokingly lifted the engine hood to show the fans this week he was
legal. Lonnie Heap won the battle for second with Bill Roberts, Jr. finishing
third.
Thirteen cars set the field for the B-Mod feature with John Oliver, Sr. taking
the early lead. In the three lead change race, the second lead of the race came
one lap later with Bob Jennings taking the lead on lap two. The third and final
lead of the race came on lap three when Wyatt Lantz passed Jennings and then
pulled away from the field. Jennings gained nearly a five second lead over the
rest of the field enroute to his first win at 34 Raceway. Scott Boles finished
second and Jennings took third.
The IMCA Stock Cars kept the fans on the edge of their seats in the most
exciting race of the evening. Kirk Kinsley and John Oliver, Jr. raced side by
side, bumper to bumper throughout the race thrilling the crowd. Oliver took the
first lead of the race in the thirteen car field. Kinsley took over the number
one spot one lap later for lead number 2. With Oliver close behind, the two
passed the stands side by side on lap five. Following a caution on lap six,
Oliver made his move to get the third lead of the race but could not shake
Kinsley. Not only were the leaders putting on a show, the race for third saw a
battle between Jeff Mueller and Rod Staats. For the final five laps, Kinsley and
Oliver would race side by side, neither one giving up. A caution on lap fourteen
made for a green, white, checkered finish. With Oliver in the lead Kinsley again
pulled along side on the back stretch staying side by side as they rounded the
turns. Coming down the back stretch they continued the side by side racing. As
they approached the finish line it would be Kinsley edging out the win by only
inches. Oliver finished second and Mueller took third.
A full field of hobby stocks took to the track with Craig Beck and Jake Wenig on
the front row of the twenty three car field. Wenig took the lead from Beck on
lap two but moving in was Luke McLaughlin. McLaughlin took the lead began to
pull away from the field developed a commanding lead. The race for second would
go on behind him between Todd Holsteen, John Oliver, Jr., and Wenig. McLaughlin
went on to get his first win of the year while Holsteen finished second and
Oliver third.
Coming up Sat., May 27 will be Darbyshire Trucking Night with points races in
all five classes.
