Bailey gets his first IMCA late model win at 34 Raceway,
points races tigthening
by Dana Royer/34 Raceway
WEST BURLINGTON, IA (Aug. 5, 2006) - Three new winners were crowned at 34
Raceway last Saturday, August 5 on Burlington Bank and Trust Night. Racing to
their first wins at 34 were Lonnie Bailey (IMCA Late Models), Quincy, Il., Kevin
Cale (IMCA Modifieds), Donnellson, and Jim Gillenwater (B-Mods), Keokuk. Getting
repeat wins for the year were Kirk Kinsley (IMCA Stock Cars), Wapello and John
Oliver, Jr. (Hobby Stocks), Danville.
With the point season winding down, three of the five classes show a 9 point
lead or less separating the top two drivers. Eighteen IMCA Stock Cars took to
the track for the first feature of the evening and once again a thriller to
watch.
Di¹Anna Chamberlain took the early lead holding on for the first seven laps of
the fifteen lapper before giving it up to Derek Coleman on lap eight. Coleman¹s
lead was shortlived after Wapello¹s Kirk Kinsley, who had moved up from the
fifth row to second. On lap ten Kinsley took the lead on the back stretch. A
five way battle for the lead between Kinsley, Coleman, Abe Hulls, John Oliver,
Jr. and Jeff Mueller made for an exciting finish with Kinsley taking the
checkered with room to spare. Coleman finished second followed by Oliver and
Hulls. Nine points separates point leader John Oliver, Jr. from Kirk Kinsley 494
to 485 with four races to go.
Jim Gillenwater, Keokuk, snapped the B-Mod streak held by Chad Sovern by winning
his first B-Mod feature this year at 34 Raceway. Gillenwater took the lead from
Phillip Beard on lap seven following a caution in the twelve lap feature. A
caution on lap eleven made for a green, white, checkered finish giving Scott
Boles the opportunity for the win. But Gillenwater was too fast and went on to
take the checkered followed by Boles and Jerry Bliesener, Jr. With four point
races remaining Bliesener holds a 30 point lead over Kevin Hetrick.
Kevin Cale won his first IMCA Modified feature at 34 Raceway this year after
taking the lead from Andy Krieger on lap ten of the twenty lap feature. Krieger
took the lead on the second lap as he and Cale went back and fourth. It was a
four way battle for the lead between Krieger, Cale, Dennis LaVeine and Josh
Foster as they raced bumper to bumper and side by side early on. A caution on
lap twenty made for a green, white, checkered finish with Cale holding on for
the win. Krieger finished second and Dennis LaVeine took third. Eight points
separates the leaders in the IMCA Modified class with Bill Roberts, Jr. holding
the narrow lead over LaVeine 476 to 468.
John Oliver, Jr, took the third lead of the race on lap 12 of the 23 car,
fifteen lap hobby stock feature to win his eighth hobby stock feature this year
at 34 Raceway. Krieger took the early lead holding on for the first four laps
before Dan Wenig was able to finally get by for the second lead of the race.
Wenig had to work to hold of Oliver for the next four laps before Oliver got by
him on lap twelve. Todd Holsteen worked his way up from the sixth row to finish
second followed by Krieger. Oliver currently holds a twenty-seven point lead
over Holsteen in the hobby stock division. Another tight point race is in the
IMCA Late Model division where Gary Russell holds an eight point lead over Jay
Johnson. With Russell and Johnson battling for the points it was Lonnie Bailey
of Quincy who took the checkered flag in the twenty two car field. Bailey took
the lead from Tom Goble on lap six and never looked back. With Bailey holding a
commanding lead, Tom Darbyshire was closing in getting past Goble on lap
eighteen for second. But Baileys¹ lead was too much and Darbyshire had to settle
for second.
