Pepsi USA Late Model Nationals
Burgtorf wins $10,000 at 34 Raceway in record setting event
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway
WEST BURLINGTON, IA (Sept. 15 -16, 2006) -34 Raceway, located 4 miles west of
West Burlington, Iowa was the site of the 300th Deery Brothers Summer Series
event and 15th annual Pepsi USA Late Model Nationals this past weekend. The two
day show held Friday and Saturday, September 15 and 16 boasted a record setting
71 late models entered to compete for $10,000 to win the 100 lap late model
feature and the final race for the Deery Brothers series this year. The previous
record was 66 cars in 1999 and 2002 both at the Pepsi Nationals at 34 Raceway.
For only the second time in fifteen years of the Nationals a previous winner
took the checkered flag. Marc Burgtorf, who won the race in 1999, became the
fourth leader of the 100 lapper on lap 28. Pole sitter Fred Remly took the early
lead before giving it up to previous Nationals winner Ray Guss, Jr. on lap six.
34 Racewayıs weekly racer Lonnie Bailey moved to the second spot by lap twelve
and then slipped past Remly on lap fourteen for his shot at $10,000. Bailey held
on for the next 14 laps weaving in and out of lapped traffic in the 26 car
field. Moving up from his 10th position starting spot, Burgtorf was closing in.
On lap twenty eight, Burgtorf slipped under Bailey coming out of turn one and
went on to lead the way for the remaining laps. One caution was thrown
throughout the 100 lapper for a tire that was hit and spun onto the track.
Burgtorfıs win netted him $10,000 for the feature race plus another $2000
courtesy of lap money. Following Burgtorf across the finish line were Kevin
Blum, Bailey, Boone McLaughlin, and Jeff Aikey rounding out the top five.
While Burgtorf was racing for the $10,000 another battle was going on for the
IMCA Sunoco Late Model Series points championship. Rob Toland held a narrow 3
point lead going into the nights action. Jeff Aikeys fifth place finish over
Tolandıs ninth place finish gave Aikey the championship by only a one point
margin, the closes points finish in the seriesıs 20 year history.
Fridayıs action featured time trials and qualifying heat races for late models
plus the Iron Man Challenge. The Challenge featured the 14 drivers with perfect
attendance through the first 15 series events of the year. Rob Toland,
Bettendorf, traveled from the rear of the field to take the checkered flag first
in the 20 lap race earning $750. Jeff Morris was clocked at 16.548 in setting
fast time Friday, earning $300 for his efforts. Saturdays action saw two B-mains
with the top three from those races also qualifying for the feature. To round
out the twenty six car field the 22nd and 23rd positions were held by the two
fastest cars in time trials not already qualified .The 24th and 25th positions
were the two highest points leaders in the Deery Brothers Point Standings not
already qualified. The 26th position was a track promoter/track owner
provisional. The 2006 series saw an average of 41.81 entries for each race, the
second highest average in tour history. The record of 42.33 was set in 2000.
Hobby Stocks
The hobby stocks provided as a supporting class on Friday saw Middletowns Dan
Wenig take the twenty four car feature win. Wenig took the lead from Jake Wenig
on lap seven of the fifteen lap race and went on to take the checkered flag for
the $500 to win prize on inches ahead of John Oliver, Jr.
Stock Cars
On Saturday, the stock cars took to the track with Burlingtonıs Darin Thye
taking the win and $500 to win prize. Thye took the lead from John Oliver Jr.,
on lap eight of the fifteen lap race and went on to take the checkered flag.
