model win
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway
BURLINGTON, IA ( May 13) Another full field of cars were on had topping the
105 mark on Fleck Sales/Miller Lite Night at 34 Raceway Saturday, May 12. The
five classes of cars saw four new winners for the 2007 season. Getting feature
wins were Boone McLaughlin, Mediapolis (late models), Dean McGee, Sr.,
Galesburg, Il., (modifieds), Darin Thye, Burlington ( stock cars), Donnie
Steward, West Burlington, (305 sprints) and Jake Wenig, Burlington (hobby stocks
). Thye would be the only one to get a repeat win.
Coming up this Saturday, May 19 The Hawkeye and Preferred Auto will present the
Mid America 305 Sprint Car Special and Veterans Appreciation Night at the races
plus late models, modifieds, stock cars and hobby stocks. All veterans get $6
grandstand admission with valid ID.
The J & J Steel/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models took to the track for the first
feature of the night with twenty cars taking to the track. Keith Pratt and Nate
Bueseling led the field to the drop of the green with Boone McLaughlin taking
the early lead. Coming off a win at Lee County on Friday night, McLaughlin was
poised for another win pulling away from the field by lap nine of the 25 lap
race. With McLaughlin out in front the battle for second would go on between Sam
Halstead and Pratt. Halstead would finally get past Pratt on lap eighteen but
could not catch the fast McLaughlin who had developed a nearly 1/2 track lead
over the field. McLaughlin took the checkered while Halstead finished second and
Pratt third.
Next to take to the track were the Zaiser Fabrication 305 sprint cars. Another
first time winner emerged when West Burlingtonšs Donnie Steward took the
checkered flag in the twelve lap feature, his first ever sprint win. The
brothers Hetrick, Kevin and Brian, sat on the front with Kevin taking the early
lead from his second row start. Steward took the lead on lap three and went on
to win by a large margin in the flag to flag race. Kevin Hetrick finished second
and Justin Newberry finished third.
The Burlington Pepsi Hobby Stock feature saw twenty four cars making up the
field. The fifteen lap race saw a father and son doing battle throughout with
Jake Wenig working to hold off his dad, Dan. With two laps to go following a
caution, Dan Wenig would pull up on the bumper of his son as they passed the
flag stand. But on the final lap, Jake would get a little edge over his dad and
take the checkered flag by 2 car lengths. Wapellošs Brodie Dopler would finish
third and Cale Samberg took fourth.
The Miller Lite Modifieds followed the hobby stocks to the track with 23 cars
setting the field. Kevin Goben and Scott Boles would put on a fierce battle
early on with Goben leading the first three laps. Boles then took over the lead
on lap five and would have to work hard to hold off Goben. On lap fourteen of
the twenty lap race, Darin Thye would join the battle taking the lead but pulled
into the infield two laps later. Boles then regained the lead on lap sixteen.
But it wasnšt to be his night when, Dean McGee, Sr., moving up from his fifth
row start passed Boles coming out of turn one with one lap to go. McGee, went on
to hold off Boles and got his first win this year. Boles finished second
followed by Bill Roberts, Jr. and Goben.
The IMCA Stock Cars capped off the night with 22 cars starting the feature race.
Another flag to flag race saw Darin Thye taking the checkered flag in the
fifteen lapper. Thye, working the high groove, took the lead from Jason Cook on
lap eleven. Cook would stay close to Thye but would not be able to catch him as
moving up to join the battle would be Todd Hoslteen. Holsteen would slip past
Cook for second as Thye took the checkered flag by 1 1/2 car lengths.
