WEST BURLINGTON, IA (June 9) Race fans flocked to 34 Raceway last Saturday,
June 9 to see double the features at the 3/8 mile track. With 120 cars in the
pit area the fans were destined to get their monies worth with ten features,
fourteen heat races and a B feature. Double features were on tap after the
Saturday, June 2 features were postponed after heavy rains fell at 34 Raceway
canceling the rest of the racing action for that night. June 9 , the races began
with the five features, continued from June 2, followed by heat races and a B
feature. The evening was capped off with another set of features in all five
classes. When the eveningšs races were completed seven of the ten features saw
first time winners at 34. Those included, Ron Elbe, Augusta, Il., ( late
models), Bobby Mincer, Burlington, (sprints), John Oliver, Jr., Danville, (stock
cars), Rob Wilsey, Keokuk, (hobby stocks), Nick Ingalls, Quincy, Il., (late
models), Ryan Jamison, Mediapolis (sprints) and Jason Gerdes, Lomax, Il, (hobby
stocks). Getting repeat wins for the season were Rich Smith, Davenport
(modifieds), Kevin Cale, Donnellson
(modifieds) and Jeff Mueller, New London (stock cars).
Flag to flag. twice. Thatšs what the IMCA late models accomplished Saturday
night in both 25 lap feature races. Taking the win in the first late model main
event would be Ron Elbe, getting his first 34 Raceway win. Elbe took the lead
from his front row start in the nineteen car field and worked to hold off Matt
Strassheim for the first six laps. Elbe then began to pull away going on to take
the checkered flag followed by Strassheim and Mark Burgtorf. In the second late
model feature, Nick Ingalls of Quincy, Illinois got his first ever late model
feature win topping the eighteen car field. Ingalls also took the early lead and
pulled way from the field, and again, Matt Strassheim would give chase. But
Ingalls would be too fast and Strassheim was never able to close in. Ingalls
took the checkered followed by Strassheim and Tom Bowling, Jr.
The IMCA modified feature saw two familiar faces getting wins with Rich Smith,
Davenport, getting his third win this year and Kevin Cale, Donnellson, getting
win number 2. Twenty three cars started the first mod feature with Mike Weikert,
Jr, taking the early lead, by lap three, Cale got past Weikert for lead number
two and held on for the next sixteen laps. With Rich Smith close behind, the
Davenport driver made his move on the final lap taking the lead from Cale as
they came out of turn four headed for the flag. Cale had to settle for second
and Brandon Savage took third. In the second modified feature, Cale got revenge.
Calešs son Tyler took the lead from Mike Weikert, Jr., on lap six of the twenty
lap feature holding
off Bill Roberts and dad. Lap fifteen saw Cale, take the lead and two
laps later, Rich Smith would move into second. Would Smith be able to make
another last lap move for the win? No. as Cale went on to hold off a close
running Smith to take the checkered flag. Smith finished second and Dean McGee
would move up to take third.
The Zaiser Fabrication 305 Sprints saw two new faces in victory lane. Bobby
Mincer, driving for Randy Plath. took the checkered flag in the first sprint
feature of the evening. In feature #2, Ryan Jamison claimed victory filling in
for an injured Kevin Hetrick. Mincer took the early lead and led the field for
twelve laps to get his first win. Kevin Roth of Kansas City, Missouri finished
second and Jayson Ditsworth took third. After a crash last week, Kevin Hetrick
was back for the first sprint feature of the evening but nursing an injured
shoulder Kevin asked Jamison to fill in and Jamison gladly accepted. Jamison
took the lead from his second row start on the first lap and never looked back
winning by several car lengths in the twelve car field. Finishing second was
Donnie Steward and third went to Dustin Whiting.
The IMCA Stock Car features saw John Oliver, Jr. and Jeff Mueller getting wins.
Oliver took the lead from Chris Webb with two laps to go in the twenty four car,
fifteen lap race. Oliver had to hold off Brandon Rothzen who was on his bumper
to get the win by one car length. Stock Car feature number 2 saw New Londonšs
Jeff Mueller getting his second win this year. Mueller became the third leader
of the race after getting by Brandon Rothzen with two laps to go in another
close finish. Jason Cook got by Rothzen to finish second.
Twenty four cars set the field for the first hobby stock feature and getting his
first win was Rob Wilsey. Wilsey took the lead from Alex Buffington on lap seven
of the fifteen lap race. A battle for the lead would go on between Wilsey, Jake
Wenig and Luke McLaughlin but Wilsey would win out taking the checkered flag. A
last lap pass by Jason Gerdes gave him his first ever hobby stock feature win.
Dean Kratzer took the lead on lap two and looked to be on his way to take the
checkered flag. But moving up from his fourth row start was Jason Gerdes, Gerdes
moved in to the second sot by lap eleven and his sights set on Kratzer. A
caution on lap fourteen made for a green, white, checkered finish. Gerdes pulls
up along side Kratzer and as they came out of turn four, headed for the
checkered flag, Gerdes moved into the lead and took the win. Kratzer finished
second and Shane Richardson took third.
