Samberg, Rothzen get first wins of 2007 at 34 Raceway

BURLINGTON, IA (July 7) Despite the heat, nearly 100 cars were on hand to
compete at Burlingtonšs 34 Raceway last Saturday, July 7 for racing in five
classes. There was plenty of racing action for the fans with thirteen heat races
and five features. Getting their first wins of the year at 34 Raceway were Cale
Samberg (hobby stocks), Burlington, and Brandon Rothzen (stock cars), Media,
Il., Donnie Steward broke a three week streak by Brian Hetrick to win the 305
sprint feature and Tom Darbyshire (late models), Morning Sun and Bill Roberts
(modifieds), Burlington, got their second win in two weeks. Fans are reminded
that the rescheduled Deery Brothers IMCA Summer Series will be held at 34
Raceway on Tuesday, July 17. Also running are hobby stocks and stock cars. This
Saturday, July 14 will be Hawaiian Night with $2.00 off admission to anyone
wearing Hawaiian or beach apparel plus there will be free snow cones.
Tom Darbyshire made it back to victory lane again this week coming off a late
model feature win June 30 at 34. Darbyshire took the lead from his front row
start with Keith Pratt not far behind. Pratt and Darbyshire put on a show
exchanging positions and side by side racing for the first nine laps. Darbyshire
then found his groove and began to pull away. Behind him Jay Johnson would
battle with Pratt for the second spot with Johnson taking over the number two
spot by lap fourteen of the twenty five lap race. Johnson had his eyes set on
Darbyshire but the Morning Sun driver was not to be caught. Darbyshire went on
to collect his third win of the year at 34 followed by Johnson and Sam Halstead
Third generation racer, Cale Samberg, Burlington, won his first ever hobby stock
feature in a race that saw twenty five cars start the fifteen lap race.
Wapellošs Alex Buffington looked to be on his way to his first feature win at 34
but Samberg had other plans. Buffington would develop a good size lead over the
field as Samberg moved into the second spot from his third row start. Following
a red flag for Luke McLaughlin who had rolled off of turn one (he was ok),
Buffington would not be able to regain his large lead. Samberg took advantage
when Buffington got too high coming out of turn two and took over the lead. The
sixth caution of the race with one lap to go forced officials to call the race
on a time limit with Samberg getting the win. Buffington finished second and Dan
Wenig took third. Sambergšs grandfather, Al, helped build the track back in
1966. His father Randy raced for several years and now it was Calešs turn.
Bill Roberts, made it two in a row after winning back to back features at 34
Raceway. Coming off a win June 30, Roberts topped the twenty car field after
getting by Dave Anderson on lap nine. Anderson looked to be on his way to his
first win leading the field by a large margin but the Burlington driver got too
high coming out of turn one and Roberts took advantage. Mitch Higdon moved into
the second spot followed by Dean McGee. Following a caution on lap sixteen of
the twenty lapper, Darin Thye got passed Higdon and McGee for second but
couldnšt catch Roberts as he took the checkered flag by several car lengths.
Brandon Rothzen got his first IMCA Stock Car win this year topping the twenty
car field. Rothzen took the lead on the restart after a pile up on the front
stretch brought out the yellow flag at the start of the race. Rothzen began to
pull away from the field as a battle for second would go on behind him between
Chris Webb and Greg Johnson. Rothzen went on to take the checkered flag followed
by Johnson and Webb. Following the race and engine claim was made by Rod Staats.
Rothzen accepted the claim and kept his win.
West Burlingtonšs Donnie Steward broke a three week win streak by Brian Hetrick
winning his second 305 sprint feature this year. With Hetrick on the inside and
Steward on the outside of the front row, Steward got the jump and took the early
lead. Hetrick tried to pass Steward on lap three and again on lap 10 but
couldnšt get the job done. On the final lap as the two encountered lap traffic,
Hetrick got held up in turns three and four and Steward went on to take the
checkered flag.
