Frankel is two for three at 34 Raceway By Dana Royer/34 Raceway BURLINGTON, IA (May 17) - Following some cold and wet weather early on in the season, the weather actually cooperated for fans and drivers at 34 Raceway, Saturday, May 17 in the trackšs second night of points races for the 2008 season. Nearly 120 cars were in the pit area competing in the five classes of races. Going home winners on KILJ Night were Jason Frankel, Quincy, Il., (J & J Steel Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models), Scott Hogan, Vinton, Ia (Miller Lite Modifieds), Donnie Steward, West Burlington (Sebastian Sandblasting 305 Sprints), Jeff Mueller, New London (Mikešs Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars and Luke McLaughlin, Mediapolis (Pepsi Hobby Stocks). It was a Quincy, Illinois sweep at 34 Raceway this week in the late model feature with the top three all from Quincy. The twenty five lap, twenty four car field saw Jason Frankel win his second feature this year at the 3/8 mile. Frankel took the lead from his front row start with Justin Reed not far behind. Both Frankel and Reed would stay out front of the pack running into lap traffic midway through. When the third of 3 cautions came out on lap 24 that set up a green , white, Checkered finish. Frankel couldnšt shake Reed but was able to take the checkered flag with room to spare. Reed had to settle for second with Steve Grotz, Gary Russell and Jay Johnson rounding out the top five. Scott Hogan made the long trek down from Vinton, Iowa to win his first IMCA modified feature at 34 Raceway. Hogan and Jim Redmann sat on the front row of the twenty four car field with Hogan taking the early lead. Burlingtonšs Darin Thye moved in to second on lap 8, challenging Hogan. Thye tried to pass Hogan late in the race but couldnšt get the job done as Hogan took the win by 4 car lengths. Thye finished second followed by Andy Krieger, Jim Redmann and Josh Foster. Donnie Steward, West Burlington, took the checkered flag in the 14 car 305 Sprint feature. Steward took the lead from Justin Parrish on lap six of the twenty lap race and never looked back as he took the checkered flag for the first time this year. Parrish finished second holding off Brian Hetrick who finished third. Jeff Mueller took the early lead in the twenty three car IMCA Stock Car feature and went on to take the checkered flag for the first time this year at the local track. With Mueller out in front a battle for second was going on behind him between Jake Wenig, Rod Staats, Todd Holsteen and Jason Cook, finishing in that order. The 2007 hobby stock track champion, Luke McLaughlin is back, winning the twenty three car feature race. McLaughlin took the lead on the first lap from his second row start with Matt Gavin not far behind. A tight race for the top three spots between Gavin and Dan Wenig made for some exciting racing for the fans.
