Steward edges out Hetrick in sprint feature, Cale gets first mod win By Dana Royer/34 Raceway BURLINGTON, IA (May 24) - A great night of racing on a fast track treated 34 Raceway fans on Pepsi night Saturday, May 24. Once again the pit area was filled with race cars ready for the nights point race action topping the 118 mark. The night saw two new winners for the year at 34 Raceway with Lonnie Bailey, Quincy, Il., winning the IMCA Late Model feature and Tyler Cale, Donnellson winning the 24 car IMCA Modified feature. Getting repeat wins for the year were Donnie Steward, West Burlington (305 sprints), Jeff Mueller, New London (IMCA Stock Cars) and Matt Gavin, Kirkwood, Il., winning the hobby stock main event. Lonnie Bailey, Quincy, Illinois raced to his first J & J Steel Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model feature win Saturday topping the 21 car field. New Londonšs Sam Halstead took the early lead from his front row start. Halstead led the field around the 3/8 mile for seventeen laps. Taking a liking to the high side, Bailey moved his way up from his fifth row start. By lap sixteen, Bailey passed his son Matt for second and then set his sights on Halstead, the leader. Still using the high side of the track, Bailey moved around Halstead on lap eighteen and never looked back as he pulled away from the field and taking the checkered flag for the first time this year. Matt Bailey got by Halstead with four laps to go to finish second and Halstead then finished third. Jay Johnson, and Tom Bowling rounded out the top five. A strong field of 29 IMCA modifieds competed for the 24 car feature with three heats and a B-Feature. Brandon Rothzen and Adam Carson set the pace early with Rothzen taking a short lived lead before Tyler Cale passed him on lap two. Cale would pull away from the field working through lapped traffic, but a caution with three laps to go would close the gap. Cale would hold on to his lead holding off a hard charging Josh Foster for his first win at 34 Raceway. Foster finished second followed by Andy Krieger, Dennis LaVeine and Chris Larson rounding out the top five. In its second year of action at 34 Raceway, the 305 Sprint class is looking strong. With fifteen cars entered in the nights action it would be Donnie Steward getting his second win of the year. Steward, who nearly didnšt make the feature due to fuel problems had to make adjustments prior to the start of the race and had to start in the rear of the field. Making the long trek from Des Moines, Justin Parrish would take the early lead and pull away from the field early on. With Parrish in the lead, a battle for second would go on behind him between Steward and Brian Hetrick. Then suddenly, with four laps to go, Parrish, the leader, pulled in to the pits and the battle was on for the lead. Hetrick and Steward would race bumper to bumper, side by side, taking turns at the lead. On the final lap of the 20 lap race, with Hetrick using the bottom of the track, Steward would take to the high side and shoot down past Hetrick coming out of turn four to take the checkered flag winning by a slim margin. Not knowing for sure who had won, an elated Steward saw his number at the top of the score board and new he had won. Hetrick finished second in the exciting finish followed by Justin Newberry, Dustin Whiting and Seth Wilke finishing out the top five. New Londonšs Jeff Mueller made it two wins in a row winning the IMCA Stock Car feature, following a win from the week before. Mueller took the lead from Corey Strothman on lap five of the twenty six car, fifteen lap race but could not pull away with Strothman, Kirk Kinsley, Jake Wenig, John Oliver and Jason Cook close behind. Mueller would finally get a slight edge with four laps to go and went on to take the checkered flag for the second time this year. Wenig would hold on to his second spot and winning the battle for third was Jason Cook. Matt Gavin, Kirkwood, Illinois, got his second win this year in the hobby stock division topping the twenty four car field. Gavin took the lead from John Oliver on lap three of the fifteen lap race. On lap eight, Dean Kratzer was able to get by Oliver and was closing in on the leader. Kratzer would pull up on Gavinšs bumper several times and with Gavin held up by lap traffic, kratzer had a shot. But Gavin was able to maneuver around the lap car and held on to his and take the checkered flag. Kratzer finished second followed by Oliver, Chad Krogmeier and Tanner Thomann finishing in the top five. COMING UP Saturday, May 31 will be Deery Brothers Automotive night with point races in all five classes. May 24, 2008 results J & J STEEL IDEAL READY MIX IMCA LATE MODELS FEATURE: 1.
