Thye takes lead with two laps
to go for stock car win; BURLINGTON, IA (June 21) It was a beautiful night for racing at 34 Raceway Saturday on Electric Rayz Tanning night. It was Hawaiian Beach Apparel Night with fans dressed in Hawaiian apparel getting a $2.00 discount at the gate. Again a good turnout of cars were on hand, some traveling extra miles due to the road closures, to get their weekly racing fix in. Winners on Saturday, June 21 included Jason Frankel (late models), Quincy, Il., Tyler Cale (modifieds), Donnellson; Darin Thye, (stock cars), Burlington, Jayson Ditsworth (sprints), Gladstone, Il., and Alex Buffington, (hobby stocks), Wapello. Burlingtonšs Darin Thye returned this week after a violent crash in his modified last week to take the checkered flag in the IMCA Stock Car feature. (Thye races weekly in both the modified and stock car divisions) Last weekšs winner, Jim Redmann took the early lead in the twenty six car , fifteen lap feature before giving it up to Jeff Mueller on lap eight. Mueller then led the field around the 3/8 mile for the next five laps until Thye pulled ahead on the back stretch on lap fourteen for the lead and went on to take the checkered flag by a single car length over Mueller. Mueller finished second followed by Rod Staats, John Oliver, Jr., and Redmann finishing out the top five. Jason Frankel continued his winning streak at 34 Raceway taking the IMCA Late Model feature checkered flag for the second straight week, and fourth this season. Frankel took the lead from Gary Russell on lap fifteen of the twenty five lap race and never look backed. But behind him a battle was going on between Russell , Lonnie Bailey and Tom Goble. Goble won the battle getting by both Russell and Bailey on the last lap to finish second. The only yellow of the race came out on lap twenty one . The late models have seen just two yellows come out in the last four features. The father son team of Tyler and Kevin Cale again finished one and two in the IMCA Modified feature for the second straight week. Tyler took the third lead of the twenty lap race on lap seven passing Lonnie Heap. A caution on lap nineteen meant for a green, white, checkered finish with Tyler hanging on to take the checkered flag for the third time this year at 34. Kevin Cale passed Heap on the final lap in turns three and four to finish second. Heap, Bill Roberts, Jr. and Dennis LaVeine rounded out the top five. Jayson Ditsworth took the lead on lap two of the the twenty lap Sebastian Sandblasting 305 Sprint feature leading the field for the next eight laps. Following a caution on lap eleven, Brian Hetrick took the lead from Ditsworth in turns three and four, but Ditsworth would get it back one lap later and went on to take the checkered flag by several car lengths, his second win this year. Hetrick followed as did Justin Parrish, Scott Boles and Justin Newberry rounding out the top five. After struggling to get laps in last week the Pepsi Hobby Stocks were back in fine form putting on a show for the fans in the fifteen lap race. One caution was brought out on lap nine for debris on the track otherwise it was non stop action. Sky Griffith took the early lead before giving it up to Wapellošs Alex Buffington on lap three. Buffington would pull away from the field and went on to get his second win this year. Dan Wenig made a last lap pass to get by Griffith to finish second.
