Webb, Fenton take 34 Raceway Stock Car & Hobby Stock
Nationals titles
BURLINGTON, IA (Sept. 20) - 34 Raceway hosted its 2nd Annual Mikešs Auto
Parts IMCA Stock Car and Hobby Stock Nationals at the 3/8 mile on Saturday,
Sept. 20 with a total of 68 cars entered for the two events. Taking home the
big checks for 2008 were Chris Webb, Biggsville, Illinois winning the Stock
Car feature and Doug Fenton, Burlington, winning the hobby stock main event.
Also competing were the IMCA Modifieds with Vintonšs Scott Hogan getting his
fourth win this year at 34 Raceway.
Chris Webb was glad the Mikešs Auto Parts IMCA Stock Car feature was 35 laps
and not 36 as smoke was coming out from under his hood as he took the
checkered flag. The Biggsville, Illinois driver led from start to finish in
the 26 car field to win his first Stock Car Nationals feature race,
collecting $1200 for the win. Webb took the lead from Shane Watts on lap two
from his second row start and never looked back. Behind Webb was a battle
with up to six cars competing for the number two spot at times.
Clayton Deppe had to work to hold his second spot holding off Nick
Fenton, Chris Wibbel and Abe Hulls late in the race. Fenton was able to get
by Deppe with eight laps to go to take second. Rounding out he top five were
Chris Wibbel, followed by Deppe and Abe Huls who moved up from his tenth row
start.
A caution filled Hobby Stock feature saw a patient Doug Fenton take the
checkered flag and collect the $1000 to win check, his third win this year.
Sky Griffith took the early lead in the 26 car, 35 lap feature before
John Oliver, Jr. slipped past for lead number two on lap 8. Two laps later
John
Oliver, Sr., took over for lead number three with Tanner Thomann close
behind. Thomann and Oliver, Sr. put on quite a show for the fans racing side
by side bumper to bumper for several laps. On lap twenty four of the 35 lap
race, Doug Fenton made his move getting by Oliver for the last and final
lead change of the race and went on to take the checkered flag by several
car lengths as Oliver held off Matt Tucker who finished second after
starting in the twelfth row. Rounding out the top five were Chris Hovden and
Thomann..
Making the long trek from Vinton, Scott Hogan raced to his fourth IMCA
Modified win this season winning the 20 lap 24 car feature. Rich Smith, took
the early lead from his second row start battling Tyler Cale early Only.
Cale took a brief lead on lap sixteen but after he and Bill Roberts bumped,
he developed a flat tire to bring out the caution. Smith got the lead back
and then had to battle Hogan for the next four laps before giving the lead
up on the next to last lap. Hogan went on to take the checkered flag by two
car lengths.
