Cook picks up where he left off in 34 Raceway season opener
Frost Buster
Dana Royer/34 Raceway
BURLINGTON, IA (April 4) - Racers and fans with the itch to go racing got
the opportunity to scratch that itch when 34 Raceway hosted is first race of
the 2009 season with the first annual Frost Buster on Saturday, April 4.
Over 90 cars competed in five classes of action on a cold, windy night.
Getting wins for the first week of racing were Bobby Mincer, Burlington (305
Sprints), Josh Foster, Montrose (IMCA Modifieds), Jason Cook, Mt. Pleasant (IMCA
Stock Cars), Dean Kratzer, Fort Madison (hobby stocks), and Travis Yakle,
Wapello (4 cylinders).
2008 34 Raceway IMCA Stock Car Track Champion, Jason Cook, picked up where
he left off last season winning the twenty car stock car feature. John
Oliver, Jr. took the early lead in the twenty lap feature. But it didn¹t
take long for Cook to move to the front as he closed in on the leader.
Midway through the race, Cook was able to get by Oliver on lap nine. Cook
stayed to the bottom of the track as he worked to hold off Oliver. Racing
side by side, bumper to bumper, Oliver would not be able to get by the
leader and Cook went on to take the checkered flag followed by Oliver, and
Abe Hulls close behind.
Driving the Sebastian Sandblasting 14s 305 Sprint, Burlington¹s Bobby Mincer
came away with his first win of the season topping the 15 car field. Mincer
took the lead at the drop of the green in the twenty lap race and never
looked back. Eight laps into the race, Josh Schneiderman had worked his way
up to the second spot with his eyes set on the leader. With Schneiderman
gaining little by little his chance for the lead came on the final lap when
Mincer got behind a lap car coming out of turn four. But the leader worked
through it and went on to take the checkered flag. With a new partnership
with the Sebastians, Mincer is excited to compete in the 305 class as well
as continuing to run the sprint Invaders circuit.
Dean Kratzer battled Tanner Thomann throughout the 15 lap hobby stock
feature and went on to get his first win this year. Thomann took the first
lead but would quickly give it up one lap later to Kratzer on a track that
was turning slick. With three laps to go Thomann would pull up to Kratzer¹s
bumper and then pulled along side on lap fourteen. A last lap challenge by
Thomann would not do the trick as Kratzer would take the checkered flag with
Thomann on his bumper. Derek St. Clair would follow right behind the two
leaders to finish third.
Montrose, Iowa¹s Josh Foster is familiar with 34 Raceway and used that to
his advantage to win the IMCA Modified feature. Foster took the lead on lap
two from Kevin Goben but gave it up to Lonnie Heap on lap four. But Heap¹s
lead would be short lived when Foster got the lead back coming out of turn
four two laps later. Foster would begin to pull away from the field mid way
through the twenty lap race and took the checkered flag. Vinton¹s Scott
Hogan moved his way up through the field to finish second followed by Heap
who took third.
The Louisa Communications/I-Wireless 4 Cylinders capped off the night with
Wapello¹s Travis Yakle getting the win. Twenty one cars took to the track in
the twelve lap feature. Yakle took the lead from Bill Whalen, Jr. with three
laps to go. The two raced bumper to bumper side by side with Yakle holding
on for the win. Whalen edged out Chuck Fullenkamp to finish second, both
right behind Yakle.
COMING UP
Coming up this Saturday, April 11 at 34 Raceway promoters and fans will be
remembering Brent Slocum with the 1st Annual ³SLOCUM 50² IMCA Deery Brothers
Late Model Series honoring the late two-time IMCA Late Model Track Champion,
Brent Slocum & his ³High Five² Racing Team. Slocum, who tragically died at
34 Raceway, June 11, 2005 in an accident in the pits, was a well known late
model driver to the Deery Brothers Series. High Five Racing has worked hard
contacting business owners, along with many friends and family, collecting
funds to pay-out an additional $6000, above and beyond the current Deery
Brothers purse pay-out. $2500 will go to the winner of the 50 lap feature.
Along with the additional $6000 added to the already $10,450 purse, for each
grandstand admission ticket sold for the event, 34 Raceway will take $1 of
each tickets proceeds and start a ³SLOCUM 50 Scholarship Fund² to be awarded
to area high school students. Also competing will by IMCA Modifieds and
