34 Raceway’s first point race wins go to Elston, Mincer, Long and Redmanm
Double Hobby Stock features this week

By Dana Royer/34 Raceway

BURLINGTON, IA (April 25) - 34 Raceway held its first point races for the 2009 season on Saturday, April 25 for all five classes of cars.
Getting wins were Tommy Elston, Keokuk (late models), Michael Long, Quincy, Il. (modifieds), Bobby Mincer, Burlington (305 sprints), and Jim Redmann, Lockridge (stock cars). With rain on the way, it was a hurry up night as they tried to get all five features in, but the goal fell just short before rain came at the start of the hobby stock feature event. So this week, Saturday, May 2 will be double features for the hobby stocks along with the regular racing program on KILJ Night.

Twenty six IMCA Modifieds took to the track for the first feature of evening with Bill Roberts, Jr. and Mike Weikert on the front row.
Roberts took the early lead and held on for the next twelve laps of the fifteen lap race. Nate Caruth, making the trip from Ames, passed Roberts on lap eleven but then spun coming out of turn four. On lap thirteen, Michael Long, moving up from his twelvth row start, took the lead from Roberts on lap thirteen and took the checkered flag passing lap cars as he crossed the finish line.

Driving the Richard Realty late model, Keokuk’s Tommy Elston took the checkered flag in the twenty two car late model feature. Elston took the lead from his front row start at the drop of the green with New London’s Sam Halstead following. As Elston pulled away from the field the battle for second would go on behind him between Lonnie Bailey, Terry Schlipman and Jason Frankel. Working through lap traffic Elston took the win in the first point race of the season for the late models. Bailey, Frankel, Schlipman and Tom Bowling would finish out the top five.

A nice field of 305 sprints were on hand with nineteen cars starting their feature race. After winning the 305 sprint season opener on April 4, Burlington’s Bobby Mincer got his second win of the year at the 3/8 mile. Mincer, starting from the worked his way up through the field. Matt Krieger would use the high side of the track to lead the field for twelve circuits of the 20 lapper. Then Mincer took advantage of a caution on lap thirteen and took over the lead on the restart. He went on to take the checkered flag in a green, white, checkered finish following caution on lap 19. Krieger finished second followed by John Draper, Tony Davis and Jarrod Schneiderman.

Jim Redmann of Lockridge won his first IMCA Stock Car feature of the year topping the twentyone car field. Redmann took the lead from Eric Flander on lap five. He continued to lead the field until lap fourteen of the 20 lap race when Jason Cook got past him on lap fourteen. But Cook’s lead would be cut short as Redmann passed him one lap later and went on to take the checkered flag. Darin Thye, Cook, John Oliver, Jr. and Bo Hunter would round out the top five.

Twenty two cars started the hobby stock feature, the final race of the night. But on the first lap of the race, Dean Kratzer flipped going into turn 3 bringing out the red light. Then the winds picked up and rain began to fall to stop the action. There will be double features this Saturday, May 2.

Coming up
This Saturday, May 2 point race action continues on KILJ night for all five classes. Then mark your calendars for Friday, May 8 with the IRA 410 Outlaw Sprints come to 34 Raceway. Also racing will be the 305 sprints and TQ Midgets.
