Thomann, St. Clair get first ever wins at 34 Raceway May 2
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway
BURLINGTON, IA (May 2) – Double Hobby Stock features, flag to flag racing
and two first time winners highlighted the second night of point race action
at 34 Raceway last Saturday, May 2. Winners included Derek St. Clair,
Donnellson, (hobby stock), Tom Darbyshire, Morning Sun (late models), Josh
Foster, Montrose (modifieds), Bobby Mincer, Burlington (sprints) Abe Huls,
Carthage (stock cars) and Tanner Thomann, West Burlington (hobby stocks).
There will be double the racing action this week with sprint action on
Friday night and point races on Saturday. The IRA 410 Outlaw Sprints will be
back at 34 Raceway again this year as they thrill the crowd. Also competing
will be the 305 Sprints with Jim Lamb Automotive sponsoring the $700 to win
305 sprint prize. Also taking to the track will be the TQ Midgets. Then come
back on Saturday for point race action for the Miller Lite IMCA Modifieds,
Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars, Pepsi Hobby Stocks and the 2nd point race
for the I-Wireless/Louisa Communications 4 cylinder Fast Dash for Cash
Series. Come see who the new 34 Raceway Hall of Fame inductees will be.
Bring your ticket stub from Friday nights action and adult admission is only
$5.00 and $1.50 beer.
Rain stopped the final feature of the night on April 25 so this week the
hobby stocks took to the track first to complete their feature race from
that night. Derek St. Clair, Donnellson took the checkered flag in the
eighteen car field to win his first ever hobby stock feature. Derek took the
lead at the drop of the green and was challenged early by Rob Wilsey. On lap
thirteen Wilsey suddenly pulls into the pits and it was clear sailing for
St. Clair. Dean Kratzer worked his way up from the rear of the field to
finish second.
The IMCA Miller Lite Modifieds have been drawing some tough competition
coming from Durant, Vinton, Ankeny, and Canton, Mo to compete with our local
Iowa and Illinois area competitors. But it would be local racer, Josh Foster
of Montrose, getting his second feature win this year. Foster took the lead
from his fifth row start passing Brandon Rothzen on lap seventeen of the
twenty lap race.
Rothzen would go a little too high and Foster took advantage to take the
lead with two laps to go as he went on to take the checkered flag. Dusty
Kraklio would follow to finish second followed by Scott Hogan who finished
third in the twenty four car field.
The J & J Steel/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA late models were the first of two
classes of racing to race flag to flag in their feature events.
It was not stop action for the late models with Tom Bowling, Jr.
taking the early lead. Bowling lead the eighteen car field around the
3/8 mile for seven of the first twenty-five laps before Morning Sun’s Tom
Darbyshire took the lead . The two would pull away from the field for the
next several laps before Darbyshire, who was in his groove, went on to take
the checkered flag by several car lengths over
Bowling. Keith Pratt, Justin Reed and Lonnie Bailing rounded out
the top five.
Abe Huls of Carthage, Il would get his first Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA Stock
Car feature win for the first time this year topping the twenty- two car
field. Huls took the lead from his front row start working to hold off Jeff
Mueller throughout the race. But moving up from mid pack would be
Burlington’s Darin Thye. With Huls holding a comfortable lead, Thye got by
Mueller on the last lap to finish second. Mueller settled for third followed
by Tim Breuer and Kirk Kinsley rounding out the top five.
The Sebastian Sandblasting 305 Sprints provided not stop action when they
raced flag to flag for twenty laps. Kevin Hetrick took the early lead
holding on for the first seven laps. Coming off a win last week, Bobby
Mincer would pass Hetrick in turn one. Working his way through lap traffic
for the next thirteen laps, Mincer would take the checkered flag by a large
margin to get his third win this year.
Donnie Steward would finish second from his fifth row start in the seventeen
car field followed by Jayson Ditsworth, John Draper and Hetrick.
Hitting the track for their second feature of the evening would be the Pepsi
Hobby Stocks. Russell Passmore and John Oliver, Jr. would lead the field to
the green flag with Oliver taking the early lead.
Oliver lead the field for the first seven laps when Tanner Thomann went to
the outside in turn 2 and took over the lead. With Thomann out in front a
battle for second was going on between Oliver and Tony Witte. The two raced
side by side and bumper to bumper the final two laps with Kratzer joining
the battle . Oliver went on to finish second with Kratzer getting by Witte
for third. The win for Thomann was his first ever hobby stock feature
victory.
