Bailey holds off late race
challenge by Darbyshire for late model victory BURLINGTON, IA (May 30) - I-Wireless Night brought a large number of fans out to 34 Raceway Saturday, May 30 for point race action with three heats of action in all five. Getting wins were Matt Bailey, Quincy, Il., (IMCA late models), Scott Hogan, Vinton (IMCA modifieds), Bobby Mincer, Burlington (305 Sprints), Jeff Mueller, New London (IMCA Stock Cars) and Derek St. Clair, Donnellson (hobby stocks). Quincy’s Matt Bailey raced to his first late model feature win this year topping the twenty-one car field in the 25 lap feature. Bailey took the lead from Cory Richards on the second lap and would pull away from the field. Tom Darbyshire had moved into the second spot by lap night but Bailey’s lead was too much. A late race caution on lap twenty-one allowed Darbyshire a chance for the lead on a restart. Darbyshire would race side by side and bumper to bumper for the next couple laps but Bailey wasn’t to be denied as he went on to take the checkered flag for the win. Darbyshire finished second followed by Tom Goble, Lonnie Bailey and Justin Reed to round out the top five. A pile up in turn three delayed the start of the Miller Lite IMCA Modifieds feature that saw twenty five mods take to the track. Dusty Kraklio took the early lead before the second and third cautions of the race came out on lap three. When racing resumed Mike Weikert, Jr., took the lead with Rich Smith taking the third lead of the race one lap later. Smith led the field for the next three laps before, Scott Hogan went to the inside of Smith for lead change number four. Hogan, driving all the way from Vinton, Iowa, would pull away from the field enroute to his first victory this year at the 3/8 mile. With Hogan in a commanding lead a battle for second was going on behind him between Smith and Josh Foster. Foster moved up from the fear of the field to take over second spot on lap seventeen as they worked through lap traffic. Hogan took the checkered flag followed by Foster, Smith, Dean McGee and Kraklio rounding out the top five. Burlington’s Bobby Mincer got win number three for the year at 34 Raceway in the Sebastion Sandblasting 305 Sprint division. Nick Guernsey took the early lead in the nineteen car field early on only to give it up to Jayson Ditsworth by lap six. Mincer moved up to second by lap seven and then got by Ditsworth for the lead on lap eleven. As the race went on, Mincer would begin to pull away from the field and went on to take the checkered flag by several car lengths. Ditsworth finished second followed by John Draper, Seth Wilke and Justin Newberry in the top five. Jeff Mueller, New London, led from start to finish holding off a challenge by Nick Fenton midway through the twenty lap, twenty five car IMCA Stock Car feature. Mueller took the early lead pulling away from the field, but a caution on lap twelve gave Fenton the opportunity to move into the lead. Fenton pulled up along side Mueller on lap fourteen but then suddenly pulled into the pits with a flat tire. Mueller then had to hold off John Oliver but was able to take the checkered flag by several car lengths. Oliver finished second followed by Darin Thye, Todd Holsteen and Tim Breuer. Sixteen year old Derek St. Clair is coming on strong this year, winning his third Hobby Stock feature, his second at 34 Raceway. St. Clair took advantage of a slow car to get by leader Luke McLaughlin on lap seven and never looked back. McLaughlin, on the other hand had to battle Dan Wenig for the second spot with Wenig getting past him with three laps to go to finish second. McLaughlin had to settle for third followed by Victor Hastings and Randy Wachter. COMING UP Coming up this week at 34 Raceway will be the Sprint Invaders 360 Non-Wing & Wing Sprint Special on Sat., June 6. Join us for a night of fun when the Sprint Invaders race their first feature with wings. Several of the drivers will then take their wings off and compete in a special “non-wing” race for the first time ever. Also competing will be the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks for points.
