Mincer and Houseman take wins in Sprint Invaders events; Thye wins stock car thriller
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway

BURLINGTON, IA (June 8) – The Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders made their second of four stops at 34 Raceway Saturday in a two feature special. For the first time ever, the second Sprint Invaders feature saw the open wheel cars take to the track without their wings. Also competing were the Miller Lite IMCA Modifieds, the Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars and the Pepsi Hobby Stocks. Getting wins were Bobby Mincer, Burlington, (sprints), Mike Houseman, Des Moines (non-wing sprints), Brandon Rothzen, Raritan, Il., (modifieds), Darin Thye, Burlington (stock cars), and Tanner Thomann, West Burlington (hobby stocks).

Burlington’s Bobby Mincer appears to be that man to beat this year.

Coming off 3 win streak last week with wins at Webster City, May 23 and Bloomfield May 29 and 34 Raceway May 30, Mincer did a double this week with a win Friday, June 5 at Donnellson in his 305 and again at

34 Raceway winning the Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders feature in his 360. Mincer took the early lead from his front row start and pulled away early on in  the 23 car, 25 lap feature and never looked back.

Burlington’s John Schulz  and Mediapolis’ Ryan Jamison would battle for second before Jamison had car trouble and had to pit.  Schulz would not be able to catch the leader and had to settle for second followed by Jim Moughan, Jerrod Hull and Ben Wagoner rounding out the top five. In memory of local vintage driver, Ed Schulthies, his vintage sprinter led the 23 car field as they saluted the crowd with their 4 abreast parade lap.

Sixteen sprints chose to compete in the first ever non-wing event that capped off the evening with Mike Houseman, Jr.  getting the win in the 20 lap feature. Houseman took the lead on the third lap and went on to take the checkered flag in a race he said “was really run.” Mike’s brother C.J. finished second followed by Matt Sutton, Matt Harms and Jimmy Davies rounding out the top five. Mincer, was undecided on if he should race the non- wing event so a flip of the coin made his decision to sit it out.

The most exciting race of the evening was the IMCA Stock Cars with a thrilling last lap pass by Darin Thye Twenty four cars started the feature with Cole Simmons and Rod Staats on the front row. Staats took the early lead in the twenty lap race followed closely by Jeff Mueller. Mueller and Staats raced side by side, bumper to bumper when on lap four Mueller got by Staats for the 2nd lead change of the race. The two continued to put on a show for the fans with Brett Timmerman close behind. Mueller led laps four through seven until Staats again got the lead. It was bumper to bumper action for the top five as they raced around the 3/8 mile exchanging positions. By lap nine, Darin Thye had moved  up challenging Timmerman for second.  On lap eleven Thye had taken over second and moved up to challenge Staats pulling along side. The top five continued to race bumper to bumper as they put on a thrilling show. The fans were on their feet on the final lap when Thye used a slide job on Staats and took the lead coming out of turn four taking the checkered just with Staats right beside him. Jim Redman, Brett Timmerman and John Oliver, Jr.

were right behind finishing third, fourth and fifth.

Brandon Rothzen took the third led of the 24 car, 20 lap IMCA Modified feature  on lap thirteen to get his first win this year.

Dustin Crear took the first lead of the race leading the field for the next ten laps before Adam Swanson got by for lead number two. But Swanson’s lead would be short with Crear getting it back one lap later. Rothzen had moved into the second spot on lap twelve trying both the inside and outside to get by Crear. With seven laps to go Rothzen got by Crear for the lead with Josh Foster moving up to second by lap sixteen. Foster made a charge for Rothzen  as the raced side by side on the back stretch on the final lap. But Rothzen would be able to hold of Foster’s challenge and take the checkered flag by three car lengths. Foster finished second, Crear third, Scott Hogan fourth and Dean McGee fifth.

The hobby stock feature also saw three lead changes with Tanner Thomann taking the third and final lead of the fifteen lap race.

Randy Watcher took the lead from Victor Hastings on lap three after

Hastings spun and then had to work to hold off Lane Kauffman and

Thomann for the next four laps.  Thomann would pass Wachter for the lead on lap seven and would pull away from the field. Meanwhile a

battle for second was going on between Kauffman, Sky Griffith,   Ray

Raker and Wachter with Kauffman winning out. Thomann collected his first win followed by Kauffman, Griffith, Raker and Jarod Conrad
