Raker makes last lap, last turn pass for hobby stock win
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway

BURLINGTON, IA (June 13) - One hundred and twenty two cars filled the 34 Raceway pit area last Saturday, June 13 with the final checkered flag flown at 10:20 p.m. following an exciting hobby stock finish.

Ray Raker, Danville made a last lap pass in the final turn to win his second hobby stock feature this year to cap off the nights action.

Other winners on Louisa Communications, Danville Telecom and Mediapolis Telephone Company night were Mark Burgtorf (late model), Quincy, Il.,  Josh Foster (modifieds), Montrose, Ia., Jeff Mueller, (stock cars), New London and Travis Demint (4 cylinders), Basco, Il.

Danville’s Ray Raker won his second Pepsi Hobby Stock feature this year in an exciting finish. Dane Fenton, Burlington took the early lead in the fifteen lap race with Randy Wachter not far behind as the two pulled away from the field. On lap eleven Fenton got sideways bringing out the caution and then headed to the pits with a flat tire, giving Wachter the lead. With one lap to go Raker, who had moved into the second spot on lap twelve, pulled up along side Wachter in turn one, but couldn’t get past him. With the two racing bumper to bumper on the back stretch, Raker pulled up along side the leader, as they passed the grandstands and edged out the win by only inches. Wachter ran a strong race settling for second followed by Derek St. Clair, Rob Wilsey and Tanner Thomann.

The Louisa Communications/I-Wireless 4 Cylinders made their fifth stop in their Dash For Cash Series with Travis Demint getting the win due to a disqualification.  Wapello’s Geoffrey Theobald took the early lead in the twenty-eight car field battling Travis Yakle for the first nine laps. On lap ten of the twelve lap race, Yakle pulled into the infield moving Demint into the second spot. The two raced side by side coming out of turn three but Demint couldn’t hang on and Theobald would pull away taking the checkered flag two laps later by several car lengths. Following tech inspection Theobald was DQ’d for a rim violation giving the win to Demint. Brian Tipps finished second followed by Brett Vanous, Tyler Whalen and John Whalen.

What can you say about the Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars?

Thrilling! These guys always seem to put on an exciting race racing bumper to bumper throughout the field. Twenty five stock cars set the field for their twenty lap main event with Joe Gerdes and Cole Simmons on the front row. Simmons took the early lead followed closely by Todd Staats and a host of others as they raced bumper to bumper as they circled the 3/8 mile for several laps.  Simmons continued to hold his lead until Jeff Mueller would make his move on lap ten, getting past Staats and Simmons for the lead. Mueller then went on to pull away from the field with a battle raging behind him.

A caution on lap eighteen of the twenty lap race closed the field but Mueller would pull away again to take the checkered flag with Cole Simmons holding off Staats and Abe Hulls for second.

Twenty four  J & J Steel/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models took to the track with Joey Gower and Colby Springsteen on the front row.

Springsteen, coming off a heat win, took the early lead and would pull way from the field early on. Eleven laps into the twenty five lap race, Mark Burgtorf was able to close the gap and would pass Springsteen for the lead coming out of turn two. A caution on lap eighteen would allow Springsteen a shot at Burgtorf but the Quincy driver was too fast and would pull away from the field again.

Meanwhile, moving up taking over the second spot was Tom Goble.

Goble  was running strong but wouldn’t be able to catch Burgtorf as the two pulled away from the field.  Burgtorf got his second win this year at 34 Raceway followed by Goble, Joey Gower, Lonnie Bailey and Jay Johnson, rounding out the top five.

Twenty seven modifieds set the field for their 20 lap feature with Elmer Arnold and  Jeff Waterman on the front row. Waterman took the early lead before Bill Roberts, Jr., was able to go to the inside of turn 3 to get past Waterman for the lead on lap four. Roberts lead the next eight laps when Scott Hogan would pull up along side on the backstretch trying to get past the leader on lap thirteen. Hogan was unable to complete the move and Roberts held on to his lead.

Meanwhile Foster had moved into the third spot and was closing in on the leaders. After three yellow flags early on it was non stop action for the next sixteen laps. The three put on a show for the fans as they encountered lap traffic with four laps to go. That traffic was beneficial to Foster when Roberts got behind a lap car as they passed the stands. With Roberts held up, Foster took advantage and went to the inside of the lap car taking over the lead and going on to take the checkered flag. Scott Hogan was able to get by Roberts to finish second as Roberts had to settle for third followed by Jeff Waterman and Jeff Schroyer as they rounded out the to five.

WoO Race fans are reminded that tickets are on sale now for the World Of Outlaw Sprint show coming to 34 Raceway Wednesday, July 8.  If you missed last year’s event you won’t want to miss this one!
