Goble takes the checkered flag for first 34 Raceway win
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway
BURLINGTON, IA (July 18) – Burlington’s Tom Goble, and Dennis LaVeine and
Keokuk’s Brandon Symmonds earned their first feature wins for the season at
34 Raceway with Goble taking the late model checkered, LaVeine the modified
feature and Symmonds the hobby stock main event. Getting repeat wins on
Budweiser Night, Saturday, July 18 were Abe Huls in the stock car feature
and Kevin Hetrick getting win number four in the 305 sprint class.
Coming up this Saturday, July 25 will be the Sebastian Sandblasting and
Powdercoating Christmas in July night at the races with all five classes
competing. Santa will be in attendance bearing gifts for lucky junior fan
club winners.
With over 100 cars in attendance it was a great night for racing at
southeast Iowa’s premier racing facility. The Miller Lite IMCA modifieds
took to the track for the first feature of the night with twenty two of the
twenty four cars entered starting the feature race.
Dennis LaVeine and Tyler Vande Kamp set the pace for the start of the twenty
lap race with LaVeine taking the early lead. But the night was troublesome
for the open wheel cars with a number of yellow flags thrown. With only six
laps completed when the final caution came out, the time limit was enforced
setting up a green, white, checkered finish. Jeremy Harris and Josh Foster
made a last lap charge at LaVeine but when the checkered flag came out on
lap eight it was LaVeine getting the win with Harris and Foster right beside
and behind him, his first this season. Foster currently leads the points
with 350 followed by Scott Hogan with 334.
The Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars were next to hit the raceway with Cole
Simmons and Tim Breuer on the front row. Eighteen cars made up the field for
the twenty lap race with Breuer taking the early lead. Breuer and Kirk
Kinsley put on a show for the fans racing bumper to bumper, side by side for
the first seven laps. On lap eight, Breuer, Kinsley and Abe Huls would race
side by side on the back stretch with Kinsley able to slip pass Breuer for
lead number two. Kinsley would then have to work to hold off Huls for the
next four laps when Huls would take the lead on lap thirteen. Kinsley would
stay with the leader for the next few laps but toward the end Huls was able
to pull away as he went on to take the checkered flag for the third time
this year. Kinsley would finish second followed by Tim Breuer and Todd
Holsteen. Huls is the current points leader with 342 followed by John
Oliver, Jr. with 329 and Darin Thye with 326.
Kevin Hetrick, Gladstone, Il., raced to his fourth win this year in the
Sebastian Sandblasting 305 Sprint division. Hetrick took the lead from Nick
Guernsey on lap two of the twentylap, fifteen car field and would begin to
pull away from the field. With Hetrick in the lead both Jayson Ditsworth and
Bobby Mincer were closing the gap when disaster struck for both Ditsworth
and Mincer.
As the two rounded turn one on lap 8,
Ditsworth couldn’t avoid a spin by a lap car, sending him in to a spin.
Mincer, who was following Ditsworth could not avoid the two as he hit
Ditsworth bringing out the caution.
Both Ditsworth and Mincer went to the pits putting Dustin Whiting into the
second spot. The racing went non stop for the next twelve laps with Hetrick
taking the checkered flag by a large margin. Matt Krieger got by Whiting on
lap thirteen and would finish second.
Ditsworth currently holds a narrow four point lead over Hetrick and Josh
Draper who are tied for second. 304 to 300
Tom Goble, Burlington, took the checkered flag in the J & J Steel/ Ideal
Ready Mix IMCA Late Model feature for his first win this year at the 3/8
mile. Goble took the lead from Matt Strassheim with seven laps to go on lap
eighteen of the twenty five lap feature and went on to take the checkered
flag. Strassheim would finish second followed by Lonnie Bailey, Mark
Burgtorf and Colby Springsteen rounding out the top five. Lonnie Bailey
currently leads the point standings with
308 followed by Strassheim with 280 and Tom Darbyshire with 276.
The final feature of the evening saw the Pepsi Hobby Stocks take to the
track with twenty-eight cars making up the field and Brandon Symmonds and
Doug Fenton on the front row. The hobby stockers were also having a rough
night with several yellow flags thrown in the first six laps. With Symmonds
in the lead the time limit was announced setting up a green, white,
checkered finish. Symmonds would hold off a challenge by Doug Fenton and
Dean Kratzer on the eighth lap to get his first win. Derek St. Clair is the
current point leader with 387 followed by Tanner Thomann with 356 and Dean
Kratzer with 343.
