A night for firsts at 34 Raceway
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway
BURLINGTON, IA (July 25) – Three drivers raced to their first feature wins
for the season Saturday, July 25 with two getting repeat wins. Gary Russell
(late models), Biggsville, Il., Bill Roberts, Jr., (modifieds), Burlington
and Kirk Kinsley (stock cars), Wapello, all took the checkered flag for the
first time this year on Sebastian Sandblasting Christmas In July Night at 34
Raceway. There was racing in all five classes and the jolly old man in red
was present giving kids rides in a horse drawn wagon on the track during
intermission.
Sebastian Sandblasting also donated several bikes and scooters given to
lucky junior fan club winners and their was a gift for the first 250 fans
entering the gate.
The racing action was the big present of the night with some big wins for
drivers who, lets just say, haven’t seen the winners circle for a while. The
first feature of the night was the Miller Lite IMCA Modified class with
eighteen cars starting the feature race. After struggling to get the laps in
last week the modifieds were back in form. Levi Smith and Dustin Crear led
the field around the circuit for the first lap with Smith taking the early
lead. When a caution came out on lap five, Josh Foster took advantage of the
restart passing three cars for the lead. But Foster would get too high in
turn two and Bill Roberts took over the lead. Roberts lead for the next
several laps working to hold off Foster as they raced bumper to bumper. On
lap eighteen of the twenty lap race Foster got a flat tire and and Scott
Hogan took over the second spot. On the final lap Hogan tried to pass
Roberts on the outside and again on the inside but couldn’t complete the
moves and Roberts went on to get the win, his first this year. Hogan
finished second followed by Jeremy Harris, Andy Krieger and Lonnie Heap.
The Sebastian Sandblasting 305 Sprints saw sixteen of the winged warriors
take to the track with Destini Clark and Tim Rose on the front row. At the
drop of the green Jayson Ditsworth charged to front from his fifth row start
taking the lead by lap two. Ditsworth would pull away from the field, but
moving up would be Bobby Mincer.
A caution on lap fourteen would close the gap between Ditsworth and Mincer.
Mincer would pass Ditsworth on the front stretch for the lead after the
restart and would go on to take the checkered flag by several car lengths.
Ditsworth would finish second followed by Kevin Hetrick, Matt Krieger and
John Draper.
Seventeen Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars saw Wapello’s Kirk Kinsley
taking the checkered flag for the first time since 2007.
Kinsley took the early lead in the twenty lap feature first getting a
challenge from Brett Timmerman. But moving up from his fifth row start was
last week’s winner, Abe Huls. Huls tried to catch Kinsley while also working
to hold off Chris Webb and Cale Samberg. Kinsley was able to hold off Huls
for the checkered flag while Huls held off Samberg at the end to finish
second. Cory Strothman finished fourth and Chris Webb finished fifth.
The J & J Steel/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models went flag to flag with Gary
Russell gettin a long awaited win. Russell took the lead from his front row
start at the drop of the green and battled Sam Halstead for the lead early
on. A three way race for the lead thrilled the crowd between Russell,
Halstead and Keith Pratt. A cars length would separate each of the top three
as the turned the 3/8 mile. On lap eighteen of the twenty five lap race
Pratt would get by Halstead setting his sights on Russell. But the night
belonged to Russell as he took the checkered flag by two car lengths over
Pratt.
Halstead finished third followed by Tom Darbyshire and Matt Strassheim.
After struggling to get going in the Pepsi Hobby Stock feature in the first
three laps, they settled in and went non stop for the remaining 12 laps with
Derek St. Clair getting his fifth win this year at 34 Raceway. Twenty five
cars started the fifteen lap race with Jake Wenig getting the early lead.
Wenig led the field for the first eight laps before St. Clair would pass him
on lap nine. St. Clair was not to be caught and went on to take the
checkered flag followed by Wenig, Victory Hastings, Lane Kauffman and Jason
Gerdes.
