34 Raceway honors veterans; Savage and Krieger get first wins
By Dana Royer

BURLINGTON, IA (August 8) –  34 Raceway paid special tribute to area veterans prior to the start of racing action Saturday, August 8 in conjunction with Two Rivers Bank Night. All veterans, past and present, were admitted free to the races and $1.00 from each grandstand ticket sold went to help send veterans on the National Honor Flight Tour to Washington D.C.  Prior to the National Anthem, before the start of the races and with 97 cars in attendance, the drivers paraded out to the track stopping on the front stretch, each given an American flag. The sixty-eight vets in attendance were led out in front of the grand stand by a color guard to a rousing applause from the race fans.  $1050 was raised through ticket sales and drivers walking through the stands for donations.

With the point races winding down for the 2009 season finishing position is so important and in the modified division the battle is close. The IMCA Modifieds took to the track for the first feature with Levi Smith and Brandon Savage on the front row of the twenty two car field. Savage took the early lead with Rich Smith following.

After the only caution of the race came out on lap two, it was non stop action for the next eighteen laps with Savage leading the way.

With the help of lap traffic, Smith closed in on Savage but couldn’t get past the driver from Keokuk. Savage went on to take the checkered

flag for the first time in the Miller Lite IMCA Modified division.

Scott Hogan moved up from his mid field start to finish third and is the current point leader with a 2 point advantage over Josh Foster.

Fifteen Sebastian Sandblasting 305 Sprints took to the track next with Gary Bonar and Nick Guernsey on the front row. Bonar took the early lead only to give it up to Guernsey on lap two of the twenty lap race. Guernsey led the field for the next nine laps before the first of three cautions came out on lap twelve.  Jarrod Schneiderman was running second until the second caution came out on lap thirteen.

That caution was want Matt Krieger needed getting a good jump on the restart passing both Guernsey and Schneiderman.  Krieger led the field for two more laps when the third and final yellow came out.

This gave three time winner, Jayson Ditsworth a shot at the leader.

On lap nineteen, Ditsworth touched the front stretch wall causing him to lose ground and Krieger went on to take the checkered flag for his first 305 sprint feature win.  Ditsworth continues to lead the 305 sprint point standings with 426 points over Krieger with 413.

Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA Stock cars had twenty cars start the twenty lap feature with Nick Fenton and Brett Timmerman on the front row.

Timmerman took the early lead with Greg Johnson following. The only yellow of the race came out on lap three but Timmerman would continue to hold his lead after the restart leading the field for seven more laps. On lap eleven, Todd Holsteen cut to the inside on the back stretch and took over the lead pulling away from the field. With Holsteen out in front a fierce battle for second was going on between Brian Holmes, Kirk Kinsley and Timmerman, all from Wapello. Holmes continued to hold off the challenges by the two and with three laps to go, and Holsteen holding a commanding lead, white smoke starting coming from the rear of Holmes’ car.  The Wapello driver would hold off Kinsley and Timmerman to finish second.  Abe Huls is the leader in the IMCA Stock Car point race with 452 followed by Darin Thye with 423.

Tom Darbyshire, Morning Sun, made a return trip to victory lane winning his second J & J Steel/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Model feature this season at 34 Raceway. Four lead changes took place throughout the twenty five lap feature. Colby Springsteen took the lead from Keith Pratt on lap two and led the field for eight more laps before Quincy’s Mark Burgtorf passed Springsteen on the back stretch. Burgtorf would pull away from the field as Springsteen and Lonnie Bailey battled for second.  Unfortunately for Burgtorf, when passing a lap car, Burgtorf and the lap car got together sending the leader up into the wall with sparks flying. Although Burgtorf was able to continued  the wall hit must have done some damage as he would start to slow allowing Darbyshire to pass him for the lead on lap nineteen. Darbyshire went  on to take the checkered flag six laps

later   with Springsteen finishing second followed by Bailey and Tom

Goble.  Currently  fifth in the point standings, Mendon, Illinois’

Keith Pratt took a wild ride over turn one landing on his top after the throttle stuck on his late model. Lonnie Bailey holds a twenty four point lead over Darbyshire with just two point races remaining for the late models.

Derek St. Clair is definitely the man to beat in the Pepsi Hobby Stock division after winning his seventh feature at 34 Raceway this

season, despite and engine exchanged last week following a claim.

Dane Fenton, Burlington, took the second lead of the race from Joe Laue on lap two leading the field for the next two laps. Lap five of the fifteen lap feature saw Doug Fenton move in to the lead when Dane got too high  in turn. On lap thirteen, and with the field closed up after a caution on lap twelve, St. Clair passed Fenton in turn one and went on to take the checkered flag by several car lengths.  St.

Clair holds a commanding lead in the point standings enroute to his first season championship  with 513 points over Tanner Thomann with 468.
