$5.00 grandstand admission on Season Championship Night at 34
Raceway, August 29
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway
BURLINGTON, IA (August 24) - Along with the Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders
Night of the Twins at 34 Raceway the Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars,
Pepsi Hobby Stocks and Miller Lite IMCA Modifieds were also in action.
Brandon Rothzen notched another win in the modified division as did Jeff
Mueller in the stock car class. Jake Wenig took the checkered flag for the
first time this year in the hobby stock division.
Brandon Rothzen, Raritan, Il, took the lead on lap six of the twenty lap,
twenty-five car Miller Lite Modified feature Saturday August 22 at 34
Raceway. Rothzen led the field for the next twelve laps before the third
caution of the night came out with two laps two go. With Scott Hogan running
second, this set up a green, white, checkered finish and a shot for Hogan to
take the lead. Disaster nearly struck Rothzen on lap nineteen as Rothzen got
too high, hitting the front stretcher wall, but he was able to recover and
continue on as another caution came out for another car on the track. Again
Hogan had a chance to catch Rothzen on the restart but Rothzen was too fast
and pulled away at the end for the win. With Season Championships this
Saturday, Aug. 29, Hogan holds a narrow 5 point lead over Josh Foster.
New London’s Jeff Mueller took the checkered flag in the IMCA Stock Car
feature getting his fifth win this season and his 50th career win on his
birthday. Mueller took the lead from Wapello’s Brett Timmerman who was
running strong leading the first fifteen laps of the twenty- two car, twenty
lap feature. Timmerman had developed a big lead before the second caution of
the night came out on lap 13. This allowed John Oliver, Jr. and Mueller to
close the gap. Mueller finally got by Timmerman with four laps to go and
went on to take the checkered flag. Abe Huls has a substantial lead in the
stock car point standings 520-487 over Darin Thye with the final point race
this Saturday.
Burlington’s Jake Wenig took the win in the hobby stock division for the
first time this season. Fort Madison’s Dean Kratzer had his sights set on
his first win taking the lead on lap two of the fifteen lap feature. But not
far behind was Wenig. After using the inside of the track , Wenig decided to
go to the outside of Kratzer on the final lap and passed the leader coming
out of turn four as they headed for the checkered flag taking the win. Derek
St. Clair, Donnellson holds a big lead in the point standings with 585 over
Tanner Thomann with 538.
