WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa
(Dec. 15) – Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods will join regular weekly
programs on eight Saturday nights next season at 34 Raceway. Points will be awarded
each night and a track champion will be crowned. 34 is the first track in
Iowa, and the second in the Midwest, to announce its decision to add the
IMCA division in 2011. “I've had drivers contact me over the past couple years about getting IMCA SportMods on our schedule. We already tend to have a really full schedule of events,” explained promoter Amy Laue. “ At the end of last season, Mike Weikert from Weikert Iron and Metal asked me again and told me the division was a complement to Modified racing, not only for the drivers, but for the fans and sponsors as well.” “We agreed to discuss the options to adding SportMods in 2011,” she added. “Mike agreed to sponsor the class, providing we could get the IMCA sanction for Saturday nights.” The schedule for next season is expected to be released in January. 34 also sanctions its Modified, Late Model and Stock Car divisions with IMCA; partial schedules are also planned for the mod lite and 4-cylinder classes. “I believe the Northern SportMods are a natural fit with all our other classes. They look similar enough to a Modified,” Laue said, “but they’re an excellent alternative for drivers who compete and have fun racing on a lower-based budget.” IMCA Late Models will run at West Burlington for the 15th consecutive season in 2011. Both Modifieds and Stock Cars have been sanctioned there since 2006.
