Bailey, Jamison, Cook, Kratzer and Rothzen get wins at 34
Raceway
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway
BURLINGTON, IA (April 30, 2011) - Points were awarded for all of the five
classes competing at 34 Raceway Saturday, April 30 and getting the top
points given for wins were Lonnie Bailey, Quincy, Il. (late models), Brandon
Rothzen, Raritan, Il. (modifieds), Ryan Jamison, Mediapolis (305 sprints),
Ryan Cook, Mt. Pleasant (stock cars) and Dean Kratzer, Fort Madison (hobby
stocks).
Lonnie Bailey took the lead with ten laps to go in the J & J Steel/Ideal
Ready Mix IMCA Late Model feature and went on to take the checkered flag for
his first win this season at 34 Raceway. Colby Springsteen, Morning Sun,
took the lead early on in the twenty-two car field followed closely by Matt
Strassheim for the first ten laps. Bailey moved up to second as the leaders
encountered lap traffic and passed Springsteen on the front stretch with
ten laps to go. Bailey went on to take the win in the flag to flag twenty
five lap race by a single car length over Matt Strassheim who had moved into
second.
Dusty Kraklio, Durant, took the checkered flag in the twenty-two car Miller
Lite IMCA Modified feature. Kraklio would lead from the drop of the green
and pull away early on. A caution on lap twelve of the twenty lap race would
close the gap on the restart with Jeff Waterman and Brandon Rothzen close
behind. Rothzen would get past Watermen on lap seventeen but wouldn’t be
able to catch Kraklio. But the thrill of the win for Kraklio would be taken
away after being found to have an illegal 8000 chip instead of 7800 required
by track and ICMA rules. After a wreck at Tipton Friday night, which ran an
open motor instead of IMCA, Kraklio and his crew worked furiously to get
the car ready for their night at 34 Raceway. After his win he and his crew
found out the hard way they had forgotten to change the chip, and the win
then went to Rothzen who finished second.
Ryan Jamison, Mediapolis, picked up a win in the W.T. Gabeline and Sons
Trucking 305 Sprint division driving the 21J for Jim Hetrick. Jamison took
the lead from Jayson Ditsworth in the seventeen car field on lap thirteen
following a restart and went on to take the checkered flag. Ditsworth held
on to finish second followed by Tony Davies and Andy Huston who had moved up
from his nineth row start to finish fourth.
After serving time in the military last year, Ryan Cook, Mt. Pleasant is
back at the track. Cook would make his return in style taking the checkered
flag in the Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA pulling away for the first six laps. A
caution on lap seven would close the gap with New London’s Jeff Mueller
challenging for the lead. Right behind Mueller would be Cook with the three
putting on a good show for the fans. Mueller briefly took the lead on lap
twelve but a caution on the same lap would send the field back to the
previous lap position. A couple laps later both Mueller and Huls would run
into trouble with Mueller ending up in the infield and Huls getting a flat
tire. Cook would then take over the lead but would have to hold off a
challenge from Nathan Wood as they passed the finish line with a cars length
separating them.
In the final race of the night, Dean Kratzer, Fort Madison, would take
the checkered flag in the Pepsi Hobby Stocks first race of the season. Matt
Gavin would lead the seventeen car field for the first eleven laps of the
fifteen lap race before he would come to a stop coming out of turn one when
something appeared to break in his #45 car. Kratzer would then take over
the lead with Jake Wenig close behind. The two would race bumper to bumper
coming out of turn three on the final lap but Kratzer would be able to hold
off Wenig who was on his bumper for the win.
Coming up Saturday, May 7 with racing action of Late Models, Sprints,
Modifieds, Stock cars and Hobby Stocks. Then mark your calendars for Friday,
May 13 when the ground shaking Lucas Oil Late Models Series will take on the
3/8 mile.
