Raceway
By Dana Royer/34 Raceway
BURLINGTON, IA (July 16, 2011) - Hot, Hot, Hot. Yes it was plenty warm
Saturday night on REXCO/Bobcat night at 34 Raceway with the point battles
heating up as well. Two drivers got their first wins at 34 this season with
Justin Parrish, Oquawka, Il. taking the checkered flag in the 305 sprint
feature and Jake Wenig, Burlington, getting the win in the hobby stock
feature. Other winners included Scott Hogan, Vinton (modifieds), Ryan Cook,
Hillsboro, (stock cars) and Nick Wilkerson, Morning Sun (4 cylinders).
Coming up Saturday, July 23 will be Elder Implement Night with point race
action for J & J Steel/Ideal Ready Mix IMCA Late Models, Miller Lite IMCA
Modifieds, Weikert Iron and Metal IMCA Sport Mods, Mikes Auto Parts IMCA
Stock Cars. and the W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305 Sprints.
Scott Hogan, Vinton, returned to the winners circle Saturday night winning
the Miller Lite IMCA Modified feature. AJ Fike took the early lead in the
fifteen car field and held on for the first ten laps before Jeff Waterman
would make a pass on the back stretch for the lead on lap eleven of the
twenty lap race. Following Waterman was Scott Hogan. Hogan would try several
times to pass Waterman before the only yellow flag of the race would come
out on lap seventeen. Hogan took advantage of the restart and went to the
inside of Waterman taking over the lead and would go on to take the
checkered flag. In the point race battle, Brandon Rothzen continues to lead
the class with a narrow six point lead over Hogan 284-278. Dean McGee
follows with 272.
Bo Hunter took the lead at the drop of the green in the Mikes Auto Parts
IMCA Stock car feature but would give it up to Ryan Cook on the next lap.
Cook would lead the field for the next eighteen laps pulling away at the end
for his second win this season. Jeremy Pundt would hold off Jeff Mueller to
finish second. The red flag came out on lap five when John Oliver, who was
charging to the front from the rear of the field would hit the back stretch
wall rolling him over and taking a hard hit by Dave Cloke who was unable to
avoid Oliver. In the point race battle, its a tight one with Cook holding
just a one point lead over Mueller 315 to 314. Oliver follows closely with
312 points.
A nice field of nineteen W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305 sprints took to
the track with Harold Pohren and Destini Clark on the front row. Pohren
quickly took the lead and held on for the first three laps before Pohren and
Kevin Hetrick got together on the front stretch bringing out the yellow
flag. When racing resumed Andy Huston would take the lead and would pull
away from the field for the next ten laps. By lap seventeen of the twenty
lap race, Justin Parrish had closed the gap. A caution on lap eighteen gave
Parrish the advantage he needed and would try first the outside and then the
inside to pass Huston for the lead and win. Justin Newberry would follow
Huston to finish third. In the point race battle, Jayson Ditsworth holds a
narrow eight point lead over Parrish 300-292. Andy Huston follows with 283.
Fifteen Pepsi hobby stocks were back this week with Victor Hastings and
Travis Plummer on the front row. Plummer took the early lead in the fifteen
lap feature holding on for the first three laps. On lap four, Jake Wenig
would pass Hastings in turn two and would pull way from the field. On the
final lap of the race, the yellow flag would come out and close the field
for the restart but Wenig was too fast and would go on to take the checkered
flag for the first time this year at 34 Raceway. Randy Wachter ran a strong
race finishing second and Jim Lynch would take third. In the hobby stock
point race battle, Wenig holds a narrow 8 point lead over Dean Kratzer 203
191 and Ray Raker follows with 185.
The final race of the night saw the Louisa Communications/I-Wireless 4
Cylinders take to the track with seventeen cars taking the green flag. Nick
Wilkerson made quick work getting the lead at the drop of the green and
would have little trouble holding that position as Jacob Darbyshire and Matt
Strassheim would battle it out for second. Darbyshire would hold off
Strassheim to follow Wilkerson across the finish line. Wilkerson holds a
narrow two point lead over Wayne Noble 157-155 in the point battle.
