Daniel Harris Earns Bud Wilson Memorial Checkered Flag

Daniel Harris in McCarthy Auto Group Winner’s Circle

(WINSTON, Mo.) – A night that began with the remembrance of the events of 9/11 and the late 2017 USRA B-Modified champion at I-35 Speedway, Bud Wilson, ended with a driver running a Bud Wilson style race to claim the race win.

Twenty-three USRA B-Modifieds took to I-35 Speedway for a 22 lap feature, and Daniel Harris led every one. The number 22 signifies the number Wilson won the B-Modified championship in last season. Harris navigated seven cautions and put together perfect restart after perfect restart, holding off challenges from Lonnie Hibner, Nic Hanes and Doug Keller, to pick up his third win at I-35 this season. Harris kept cool as the constant glow of yellow filled the track, never missing his marks as he ran the cushion most of the race. Doug Keller drove to a second place finish. Mike Striegel ran top five all race on his way to a third place finish. Chase Galvan patiently drove to fourth and Jeremy Pittsenbarger rounded out the top five.

The USRA Modifieds saw much of the same, as cautions slowed this race seven times. Similar to Harris, Dennis Elliott led every lap and handled every restart smoothly on his way to his eighth win of the year. Mike Striegel showed his nose to Elliott several times, but could not make the attempts stick and settled for a second place finish. Nathan Vaughn ran the cushion to a third place finish. Derrick Hicks and Robbie Reed made up the rest of the top five.

The USRA Stock Cars brought a fast field to the track with five different drivers challenging for the win. This race slowed several times due to yellows, keeping challengers close to race leader Gerald Wahwahsuck. Early in the race, Wahwahsuck held off Jeff Dixon, before Dixon slowed on a restart and did not finish.

Next to challenge Wahwahsuck was the young Austin O’Neal, who wore out the back bumper of Wahwahsuck. Kevin Anderson worked his way through the field using the low line, one of the only cars to show speed next to the infield tires. Anderson began to challenge for the lead when a faint trail of smoke became visible behind Wahwahsuck. With two to go, the engine popped as Wahwahsuck became a moving fireball. The fire quickly put itself out and Wahwahsuck retired from the race. On the restart, O’Neal made a final attempt at Anderson, clearing him with a slider, before Anderson completed the cross-over for the eventual win. The battle allowed Billie Hoover to sneak in for second. O’Neal finished third, Cletus Murray fourth and Blake Peeler fifth.

The ULMA Late Models, another race filled with cautions, saw Tommy Cordray exemplify the cliché, “it’s better to be lucky than good.” Cordray looked to be on his way to a top three finish when Johnny Fennewald and Greg Trulove made contact off turn four. Trulove lead most of the race before the incident. Cordray barely found a hole to miss the wreck and inherited the lead. Cordray held off a late charge from Todd McCoin, who finished second, to take a trip to McCarthy Auto Group Winner’s Circle. Tucker Cox finished third, early race leader Cody Holtkamp finished fourth and Matthew Lance finished fifth.

Justin Asher and Bobby Lopez put on a show in the first half of the E-Modified feature. The two ran side-by-side for six laps before Asher cleared Lopez. The pass ended up being for the win as Asher won and Lopez finished second. Kody Parrott finished third and Corey Myers fourth as the two and Lopez crashed at the line fighting for those positions. Leroy Morrison rounded out the top five.

The Pure Stocks feature was another one riddled with cautions. Beau Wells solved the riddle the quickest and punched his ticket to victory lane. In a race where restarts determined the outcome, Wells had the best ones. Anthony Hill finished second, Ron Hill third, Travis Cadwallader fourth and Jay Barnes finished fifth after rallying back from involvement in the early yellows.

The Sport Compacts saw the domination of John Willard challenged and his recent tear of wins end. Joseph Mick grabbed the early lead and pulled away from Willard. Mick ran a mistake free race and held off a hard charging Steven Bunton to take the win. Bunton finished second and Willard third. Alvin Cooney and David Miller finished fourth and fifth, keeping the Sport Compact point’s battle close.

The Grand Nationals saw Houston Johnson half-track the field after both Chad Fuller and Tyler Cadwallader dropped out of the race with issues. Johnson has now won 12 races in the class this year. Chris Kline finished second, John Hanson third, Cadwallader fourth and Fuller fifth.
