Racers and fans brave the heat for Mid-Season Championships at 34 Raceway

BURLINGTON, IA (July 7, 2012) – Racers and fans didn’t let the extreme heat keep them Metal, TA Auto & Tire and Smoke E. Bones Mid Season Championship night Saturday, July 7. Six classes were in action plus there was a candy dash for the kids during intermission. Getting wins Saturday night were Tom Goble (late models), Burlington, Jeff Waterman (modifieds), Quincy, Il., John Oliver, Jr., Danville (stock cars), Chris Larson (sport mods), Keokuk, Jake Wenig, Burlington (hobby stocks), and Evan Epperson (mod lites), Muscatine.
Coming up this week, Saturday, July 14 at 34 Raceway will be Crazy Coyotes Bike Night & River Rats 12 Fundraiser. The 305 sprints will be back this week for their mid season championship. It will also be Scout Night will all scouts in uniform admitted FREE to the grandstands. 34 Raceway will also welcome employees from Federal Mogul . Classes running this week will be late models, sprints, modifieds, stock cars, hobby stocks and 4 cylinders. For more information go to www.34racewaycom.
Jeff Waterman, Quincy, Il., picked up a win in the Coors Silver Bullet IMCA Modified feature. Waterman took the lead from his front row start and led the field for the first fourteen laps of the twenty lap feature before Josh Foster would pass him on lap fifteen. Three laps later, Foster would slow in the back stretch and Waterman would get the lead back with one lap to go. A caution came out on lap twenty and Waterman would have to hold off Dean McGee for the win.
John Oliver, Jr., Danville, took the lead from Jeff Mueller on lap ten of the twenty lap Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA Stock Car feature and went on to get his second win in two weeks. Oliver worked for every bit of the win holding off Brett Timmerman by 2 car lengths at the finish line.
Fifteen year old Evan Epperson, Muscatine, picked up his first Holmes Concrete Mod Lite feature this year at 34 Raceway topping the fourteen car field. Epperson took the early lead from his third row start and never looked back pulling away from the field to take the checkered flag by a large margin.
Proud new papa, Jake Wenig, Burlington, took the checkered flag in the Pepsi Hobby Stock feature in a close race. Wenig and his wife welcomed a baby boy at 1:30 Saturday morning. Wenig and Victor Hastings, Oquawka, Il. battled early on before Luke McLaughlin would take over the number one spot on lap four. McLaughlin would lead the field for the next ten laps of the fifteen lapper till he got loose coming out of turn one and Wenig took advantage. The yellow came out with one lap to go when Matt Gavin lost a tire setting up a green, white, checkered finish. Wenig and Hastings battled for the lead crossing the finish line side by side. Wenig edged out the win in an exciting finish.
Chris Larson, Keokuk, broke the streak held by Tony Dunker taking the checkered flag in the Weikert Iron & Metal Sport Mod feature. Larson took the lead from his front row start and held off a hard charging Dunker for the win.
The final feature of the night was the IMCA Late Models and fans were glued to their seats. Sam Halstead took the early lead from his front row start and held off Ray Guss Jr. for the first eighteen laps before the only caution of the race came out. On the restart Halstead would
continue to hold on to his lead but joining the duo was Tom Goble.
Goble would get by both Guss and Halstead on lap twenty of the twenty five lap feature and went to to take the checkered flag as they crossed the finish line side by side.
