KANSAS CITY, KS (October 19, 2012) – Friday night’s Clyde Ellis Modified Shootout was filled with a who’s who of modified racers from the Midwest. When the 1st night was over it was one of the best standing tall in victory lane, Ryan Gustin.
A total of 54 drivers checked in on Friday night. It was to be a star studded event as the first green flag dropped on the night.
Gustin, who won the innaugural USMTS feature at Lakeside back on Juyly 13th, got off to a fast start picking up the win in heat race #4.
John Allen, Rick Beebe, Chase Junghans, Nic Bidinger, and Kelly Shryock would join Gustin as heat race winners on the night. Each driver would redraw for their starting spots for the 25 lap A Main event.
Most of the racers knew that it was going to be a tough task as Gustin put himself on the front row, drawing the number 2 starting spot for the feature.
Right from the drop of the green flag it was Gustin that would get out of the gate first. Gustin, who also drove in the Late Model portion of the show, needed only that brief second at the beginning of the feature to take the top spot and hang on.
As Gustin began to extend his lead, the competition could only hope for a yellow flag that could bunch the field up and bring them closer to the USMTS National Champ. It wouldn’t happen as there would not be a single yellow flag during the feature event.
This would be Gustin’s 2nd win at Lakeside Speedway in 2012 as he rocketed to the win.
C. Junghans put together one of his best races of the season and wound up with a runner-up finish to Gustin.
Hughes and Allen would tangle for the 3rd spot in the feature. Hughes would get the better of the deal as he worked his way past Allen at the midway point and held on to the 3rd spot. Allen would finish in 4th.
The 9x USMTS National Champ, Shryock, drove his way up to 5th rounding out the top 5.
Al Purkey and Mark Dotson were two of the hard chargers on the night. Dotson began the feature in the 18th position and finished 8th, Purkey, meanwhile, started 23rd and finished in 11th.
The 2nd night of the Capitol Federal presents the Clyde Ellis Lucas Oil MLRA Late Model Showdown and Modified Shootout gets going Saturday night with the spectator gates opening up at 5 p.m., hot laps at 6:45 p.m. and the first heat goes green at 7:30 p.m.
