Austin McCarl – The Racing Rhythm!
(Bill W) May 16, 2013 – A sixth place finish at Huset’s Speedway highlighted a weekend of racing for Austin McCarl in the New Gulf Resources/Excel Therapy Specialists/Bargain Barn Tire #17A sprint car. Austin also competed with the World of Outlaws at Knoxville Raceway. The young Altoona, Iowa driver is getting his racing rhythm back and plans a pair of events again this weekend at Knoxville and Huset’s.
The Outlaws saw 51 cars sign in at Knoxville on Saturday. “We didn’t get qualified where we needed to (28th),” says Austin. “I got out there and ran around the top. I should have probably run the bottom. I need to get more races in so I can feel more comfortable in the car.”
After finishing sixth in his heat, Austin headed to the B. “We weren’t really good in the heat race,” he says. “We were off on the car. In the B, we got a lot better. I got to racing there for fifth I think it was, and got cut off going into three. It took the air off my wing and cost me a lot of time and momentum. It took me a while to get back going. Another car or two got me there too.”
Austin was rolling well, but a lack of fuel sidelined him. “We were cruising there after a couple of restarts, and then we had a little fuel pickup problem,” he says. “With all the stops and yellows, I don’t think we had enough fuel in for that. It wasn’t the way we wanted to end our night.”
Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota ran their season opener on Sunday. “We were ninth quick, and ran third in the heat,” says Austin. “We were trying to save our tire a little bit.”
Austin would start ninth in the main event. “Unfortunately, the racetrack wasn’t in ideal condition,” he says. “After the first lap of the race, everyone was following the leader around the bottom. I tried not to make any mistakes, and take advantage of other driver’s.”
He would advance to sixth at the checkers. “We caught a few spots and got up behind my Dad (Terry McCarl) in fifth,” says Austin. “On the restart, we kind of got racing with Kyle (Larson) and he hit the berm. We had to slow down behind him, and Cole Wood drove around me on the restart. He did a really good job.”
Austin will be looking for his first win this weekend. “We were happy to roll in the trailer both nights,” he says. “We had no engine problems and no torn up stuff. We’ll be ready again this week for Knoxville and Huset’s.”
