Shute Cashes First in Night #1 of Southern Iowa Grand Week at the Southern Iowa Speedway

Oskaloosa, Iowa (July 16th 2013) – Hot Temperatures and the Southern Iowa Fair always seem to go together pretty well and along with that is some great racing action. Tuesday Night was the first of two nights of racing at the Southern Iowa Fair sponsored by Pepsi Cola Mahaska Bottling Company and KBOE Radio, the fans in attendance saw some great racing.
First feature of the night was the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA Sport Mods feature and it was a driver nickamed “Spud” Eric Flander grabbing the lead and really not being challenged even though Carter VanDenBerg wasn’t too far behind. VanDenBerg tried to give a shot when lap traffic started to slow your leaders but Flander was not to be denied his first career Sport Mod win. VanDenBerg finish second, Track Point Leader Curtis VanDerWal was third, Brett Lowry in fourth and Tony Johnson in fifth.
Mike Morrill grabbed the early lead in the Stars Heartland West Tour Race but it was Josh May grabbing the lead away on lap four. May went on to take the win meanwhile Andy Hennigar grabbed second from Morrill on lap six. Morrill settled for third, Todd Shute, driving the DC5 came home fourth and Dusty Masolini was fifth.
“Chelsea Charger” Damon Murty redrew the pole and took full advantage of the in the Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars feature. However “Big Daddy” Jason Cook stayed in tow with Murty just never able to complete the pass as Murty took the win and Cook finish in the runner up position. Corey Stout, Brad Pinkerton and Kris Walker rounded out the top five.
Pepsi Cola IMCA Hobby Stocks feature saw Nick Murty grabbing the early lead but Dale Porter snuck by on lap three. Porter held on to the lead until caution waved on lap eight for Brandon Potts on the backstretch. On the restart, Porter experienced troubles sending him to pit side that handed the lead over to Bill Bonnett. Bonnett and the field saw the caution wave on lap nine for Derek Hodges in turn one. Bonnett fought off challenges from Dustin Griffiths on the restart before going on to take the win the second time in six days at SIS. Griffiths, Eric Stanton, Nick Murty and Justin Hook rounded out the top five.
Up next was the main attraction of the night, the 25 lap Karl Performance Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA Modifieds feature. “The Iceman” Scott Hogan grabbed the lead on lap one and shortly after the caution waved twice. First caution was for Jacob Murray, Zach Less and Hunter Marriott getting together in turn two. On the restart, Casey Greubel lost handle collecting Richie Gustin, Jimmy Gustin, Tyler Groenendyk, Cayden Carter and Ronn Lauritzen in turn two. Hogan continued to lead until “Toddzilla” Todd Shute snuck by on lap nine despite a caution on lap six when Brandon Banks experience troubles. Shute pulled away and went on to grab the win over Hogan, Track Promoter Mike Van Genderen, Dylan Smith and Steve Stewart.
The final feature of the night was the KBOE Radio IMCA Late Models feature and it was Nick Marolf leading from start to finish in the twenty lap feature. Tommy Elston ran second the entire way, Justin Kay was third, Todd Cooney was fourth and Chad Holladay was fifth.
Racing continues Wednesday Night with night #2 of the Southern Iowa Fair sponsored by Pepsi Mahaska Bottling Company and KBOE Radio. IMCA Modifieds ($1,000 to win), IMCA Stock Cars ($450 to win), Sport Mods ($400 to win), Hobby Stocks ($300 to win) and Sport Compacts ($150 to win). Modifieds, Stock Cars, Sport Mods and Hobby Stocks drivers will be eligible for these higher payouts providing they competed Tuesday Night. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm.
