O達rien, Spieker, Ballinger and Hudson take opening night wins at ACS CORNING, IA (May 17) - It was a much anticipated opening night for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at the Adams County Speedway as what was suppose to be night number six turned out to be the first event of the season. Jason O達rien, Chris Spieker, Ron Ballinger and Matt Hudson scored the feature wins for the evening. In the Whelen late model feature it was Todd McKee who jumped to the early lead and began to disappear from the field. Jason O達rien moved through traffic and once he got to second began to reel in McKee for the lead. It appeared O達rien may not have the time needed to challenge for the lead without a caution, but he got the yellow he needed with seven laps to go as Chris Spieker and Todd Morgan tangled while battling for position. On the restart, McKee went just a little too high coming off turn four and allowed O達rien the opening he needed to take the top spot as he sped off to claim the victory. O達rien and McKee were followed at the finish by Paul Glendenning, Leon Zeitner and Scott Koskovich. J.C. Wyman took early command of the Budweiser modified field, but the man on the move was Chris Spieker. Spieker came up and won an exciting three-way and most of the time three-wide battle with Jeff James and Dan Mueller to take the second spot. After a caution period Spieker wasted no time taking on Wyman for the lead, which he got. The rest of the way, Wyman was able to stay within striking distance, but could not mount a challenge. Spieker and Wyman were chased to the checkered by Mueller, James and Ryan Peckham. In the Northland Oil pro street feature, Joe Zadina took the early lead but it didn稚 take Ron Ballinger long to let it be known that he would be challenging for the win. Ballinger ran second for the first half of the race, and dogged Zadina all the time. Just past the halfway mark, Ballinger was able to move to the lead. From there, he pulled to a comfortable margin to collect the win. Mike Garner and Craig Garner moved by Zadina for second and third with Zadina finishing fourth and Dave Schafroth rounding out the top five. The NAPA hobby stock feature, just like so many over the years, saw a pack swap many positions and a little paint for the entire distance of the race. Rick Ritchie and Jeremy Auten paced the early laps until Chris Vannausdle wiggled out of the pack to take the top spot. With the swarm of cars at his rear bumper, Vannausdle led until engine woes slowed him and ended his night. Matt Hudson took over from that point and took the feature win ahead of Jesse Sobbing, Brad Derry, Jeremy Auten and Josh True.
